I have never hit my dog. I will just look at her and say "did you do that?" The dog will go sit in her bed and give me the Im sorry look.

and never give your dog cooked chicken with bones in it. It dries them out and they can splinter. Raw chicken is the only way

I don't see how feeding raw is any cheaper, that's why I haven't been doing it. But I do buy the most expensive dog food I know of and that's a PITA.. so maybe I should try to switch. We'll see.

Stay away from MEAL chicken-meal lamb-meal anything with meal as the first ingredient, dont get it. You would be surprised how many expensive dog foods are not any better than a cat turd for nutrition.

I'm going to try to start introducing more raw meats to her, but I have a 50lb bag of science diet I just bought so I'll probably wait to switch completely till that's gone.

There was 1 dog (coon dog) that showed that he would growl and give the hint that he would bite. He did it to my bro (10 or 11 years old at the time). That dog was put down right then. REGARDLESS of how good they were at hunting.

All it takes is ONE time! Thats it. Thats the way i look at it and its just WAY TOO MUCH of a liability for my kids or anyone else and their kids. Not worth it in any way to me. I was bit by a neighbor's dog a while back and it turned into a big ordeal due to me calling the owner a "fucking coward if he doesnt put a bullet in that dogs head RIGHT NOW!" Cops came and shit and ended up the pound put the dog down.
So the dog growled, and you put it down meaning you KILLED it right? Yeah thats a great idea, especially since it was an 11 year old kid that was most likely hyper active and frightened the dog, My dog growls at almost every kid it sees and the trainer says its normal cause kids move faster, and make more noise than adults, you can work with the dog to get past that, you dont kill it. And your neighbors dog, It just walked over and bit you for no reason? Please I would like to hear the whole story of how the dog came around to biting you? I am not trying to be an asshole but you sound like the type of person that should not own pets, except maybe a goldfish. Dogs growl and bark, its nature, especially if they feel like their loved ones are being threatened in any way like a hyper active kid that they arent sure what he is trying to do, they feel that is a threat to them or their owner, but they should be able to be told its OK and then they stop, thats why my dogs are in training, so they are protective but can be told when to turn it off. My oldest male will tear someone into pieces if the walk into my house or threaten me when he is on the leash, but when he is off the leash or told the people are ok he is like a poodle...btw he is a 120lb doberman

Pitts get a bad name from everyone training them to be fighting dogs. I went out of town for a week when Lady was maybe a year old (she's a walker coonhound) and left her w/ a 1 1/2 year old pitt and a 9 year old doberman. When I came back her and tequila (the pitt) were running around the yard and wrestling (lady was always winning) just like any other dogs would. Ignorant people give those dogs a bad wrap more so than the dogs themselves

Pits are some of the best dogs you can own, but you do have to address their needs properly, especially their dominant tendencies, or else there can/will be problems.

I knew getting her that I would have to be VERY careful in how I trained her so that she would know that she is in no way to assert dominance over anyone, ever. I was advised by a trainer who specializes in dominant breeds that I should aim to teach her to always assume that anyone she comes into contact with, animals included, is her superior and she should be subservient and obedient to them.
Well along with that I have been told to make sure she knows that I am in sole control of EVERYTHING she does, so I am. She eats only when I allow her to (2x a day) and goes out on a pretty much set schedule. I also decide when playtime, petting time, etc is.
She hasn't shown many dominance issues as far as I can see. She's wonderful with guests and the two other dogs she is allowed to play with, as well as my son.
Here's the problem. When I first got her, I could punish her simply by say showing her the item she was not supposed to be playing with and popping her on the nose. However recently she knows when I am going to punish her and runs away. This quite frankly sets off my already hairline-trigger temper. I catch her and bring her back to the (say she peed on the carpet) spot and try to pop her. She fights me and will not allow me to do it, so I end up hitting her because she is fighting me.
Well a few minutes ago she was chewing on my son's shoe and I said "no" and got the shoe and told her to come so I could pop her with it. she ran to her kennel so I went to my room where the kennel is, sat down, and told her to come, she didn't. I went to pull her out of the kennel and she tried to bite me and got my finger a little on the second try.
I need help getting this dog to not fight me. I probably have punished her a little harshly previously but I can't let her run and fight me when I am trying to discipline her.
i didnt read any replys....

but if the dog ive had for awhile attempts to or actually bites me then the dog is gone

Thats a problem with people buying dogs that dont know about the breed when they buy them, a lot of big dogs, dobermans, pitts, rotts, chows, boxers, etc have a dominant trait, they will at one time in their life like puberty try to test their master and see if they can dominate him cause he is the "boss" so when they try that you do have to be kind of harsh and beat them and the best thing is to grab them and shake them and pin them down on their back (when they are on their back they are in the most submissive form) a dog on its back feels it is over and they are done. Once you have done that they wont test you again. The best way to avoid this for those of you that think they should be killed for doing what is their born instinct is to not buy a dog that is of protective nature.....buy a poodle, or a terrier or some sort and you dont have to worry about the dominance issue. I have raised and bred dobermans and my parents raised and bred dobermans before me and I havent owned one yet that didnt test its owner once it started becoming an "adult" the females are even worse, they are usually more aggressive and more protective.

I think that I provoked her last night. She didn't growl or bare her teeth at all she just snapped a little, I'm calling it a reflex at worst. It was my fault and it won't happen again.
My best friend has an american pit and that dog has SERIOUS dominance issues. She showed up at my house with it and it tried to attack me no less than 3 times, requiring her to hold it's leash and sit on it.. the last time I hit it upside the head w/ a hammer but that didn't even stop it. That dog is going to kill someone because she doesn't know how to control it.
Oh yeah, I propose a HARDCORE DOGS CLUB

and it may sound funny but biting back does work too. but you have to wait till you have the dog totally submissed before risking putting your face that close to an angry dog

Another thing people need to understand is you dont have to beat the dog with a bat, or hammer, or something hard, I find a rolled up newspaper works the best, these dogs are tough and hitting them with your hand is just going to hurt your hand, but the sound of your voice when mad and the noise of the paper when smacking them puts the fear in them and lets them know they have done wrong, I personally like the pincher collar to train them it pinches the skin on their neck when you jerk it.

Yeah the thing about biting a dog works for teaching puppies not to bite you cause it shows them that it hurts, I also take and put their paw in their mouth and squeeze their mouth shut on it. You dont want to bite and angry dog but with puppies it is a good way for them to learn especially with those razor sharp puppy teeth

I didn't want to hit her with a hammer but she's a massive dog, I had a hammer in my hand, and she was seriously aiming to take a piece out of me. That and her "mommy" had her in a pussy ass collar w/ a chihuahua leash.
