FInally Got My New Winter Beater :D

First of all, let me say: Thanks Jake. Finding this thing was awesome. It was only 30 miles from home.

So yeah. I don't drive the Stang in the winter. And I've always bought 200 or 300 dollar beaters. But I have a 4 hour drive, one way, through lots of brutal winter weather. Been making this drive for my family for over 12 years.

I almost traded the Mustang in on a 4x4 PU last winter. But I couldn't do it. Chickened out at the last second.

So I said to my self, "Self, you been buying beaters for a while now. Why not buy a used 4x4 somethin-somethin, you dumb ass. Just save up a little earlier."

So I agreed with myself. And myself saved up 1900 bucks. And Jake found this online for me.

A one owner, lady driven, 1999 Explorer with 162,000 km. Which is right around 100,000 miles. Got the 4.0 SOHC 6 in it. Auto.

Had a new trans put in it 12k miles ago. With bills to prove it, at a reputable trans shop here.

Has a/t tires on it, in excellent shape. Runs awesome, 4wd works perfect. Not an Eddie bauer, but it's otherwise loaded, windows, cruise, p/seats, keyless entry, etc.

On the negative side, the rear quarters are shot. But fortunately, only the outers. The inner fender wells are solid. Ditto for the floor pans underneath. Just normal surface rust on the seams. No oil leaks. The rear hatch latch on the driver's side is fucked. Someone keyed it on her last winter. Bottom of the rear doors are pretty bad. Not rusted right through yet, but bad enough. Rear wiper is missing.

So. I have a line on inspections here. Not a bfd. It passed emissions 11 months ago, so that's clean.

Other than that, everything works. a/c, windows, locks, all accessories, driving lights, everything. The oil on the dipstick was super clean.

She wanted 1500 for it, and I offered her 1100 after seeing the rear quarter panels. She asked for 1250, and we agreed on that.

I'm going to get it safetied, fix the hatch latch, plate it, start driving her, and then take it to my buddy's shop to fix up the body.

I'm super psyched, to be honest. I know it's just a beater, but it's not about the actual vehicle for me. I've been fighting through 240 miles of snow for almost 13 years now. Never had a 4x4. I've driven lots of them in my time, so yes, I know to be careful with them, just not had one for this hellatious commute I do. It's not even about me being able to go 70 mph in snow.

But it'll be damn nice to be able to go 45 and feel comfortable, and to be able to pass those old birds who you come up on doing 25 mph. Can be done in a car, but it's a lot tougher.

Anyway. Here she is. My daughter has anointed it 'Monty'.

Hey, she's a girl. Girls are like that.

On the way down to see it in Barrie. It's only 35F here right now... it was practically snowing earlier. Reeaally need the truck. lol

The truck

Nice buy man!!! I wish I could find pickups around here for those prices. I need a truck. HOLY HELL at that rust on the back, snowy weather must be a real bitch up there man. The price was well worth it though, seriously you wont find deals like that around Texas. I'm on the edge of trading the mustang in on a pickup myself. Its a hard decision. The "right" truck slipped away from me. 2006 crew cab 4x4 f250 king ranch. LOADED. Dealer is trying to get me into a 2010 F150 CC 4x4, but I don't like them. Anyways, congrats!

Good choice. Explorers are good, soild little trucks. Good you picked something with a frame instead of a unibody. Nice and heavy, good for the snow!

lol thanks man. Up here we're used to fixing some rust on our beaters. We're mainly concerned with the floorpans, frame, and undercarriage. Which is all in good shape on this one.

lol yeah. My Stang doesn't move too well through our winters. Not to mention having to do it for 240 miles one way.

Yeah I doubt mine is going to do very well. I live in Iowa and they're saying rain tomorrow with a possibility of snow.
