Kit Car or Restore a Classic?

After I graduate college in 2 years my dad and I are going to start a project car. I'm trying to decide if I want to restore a 1st gen Mustang or Camaro or if I want to build a kit car. If I go the classic car route in will be a dragstrip/show and shine car and if I go the kit route it will either be the Factory 5 GTM or the K1 Attack. Links to the kits below. Input?

GTM Supercar

current model range | K-1 ENGINEERING

i'm not a big fan of the GTM, but i would take a factory five coupe or roadster in a heart beat.

another car to look at if you want a kit car is the Ultima GTR. it runs on the corvette drivetrain just like the GTM and it holds the world record for fastest 0-100-0mph time at 9.3 seconds with a 720hp twin turbo LS1

The performance on that car is rediculous but I'm not crazy about the looks. I don't think I could fit into it anyway lol.

If you can get your hands on a nice first gen camaro or mustang that would be my choice. I'll probably have to just settle for a Year One body shell if I ever decide to do one, at least I won't have to replace any rusty panels.

After I wrecked my 89 5.0 I actually contemplated putting it in storage until I could afford the Factory Five roadster.. for some reason I love the way that model looks. There is a hotrod shop by my parent's house that does nothing but restore and sell cars. They had one at some point. Affordable Dream Cars is their website. The factory 5 car is not on the site.

My dad and I are restoring his '69 SS 396 Chevelle (non door post body). His parents (my grandparents) custom ordered it for him when he graduated high school. The best thing about popular classic cars is there is always some company that sells everything for them. When you start with something very few people have seen, although it is cool in its uniqueness, finding parts can prove to be a bitch...

btw... what's the TAMUSCC all about? I've seen their cars at Sbisa, but there never were any Ford guys there.. just a subaru, a 4 door pontiac, a T/A, and a miata.

I would feel bad turning something that rare into a drag car.

Any other cool kit cars or opinions on kit cars as a whole? The idea never even crossed my mind until I read a article in hotrod magazine about the new factory 5 kit.

THe performance of a kit car is however you make it.

But my vote goes to the fact 5 kit build but I guess my opinion is slightly bias on this...

restore=good resale value, and marginal fun

classic=decent resale value, good fun, good wow effect

kit car=marginal value, super fun, ans marginal wow.

GTM for the win... thats a hot car, but realize, the pictures they show are people who drop a lot of money ontop of what they start with.

^ Thats no shit... I have already dropped 15k into mine and still dont have a frame, motor, trans, rearend, brakes, ect...

Shit adds up quick, I cant remember exactly but I figured my build to come out to 35k once everythings said and done. But this is also using a GT500 5.4 and some mods, so there is 15k alone.

I thought the gtm came with everything but the motor, rearend and trans. How's the build going so far?

Heres a list of the stuff you will need to get that doesnt come with the kit...
( Straight from Factory Fives site )

Major Components/Parts 1997-2004 Corvette C5

Engine, computer and exhaust manifolds

Front and rear suspension components (minus leaf springs and shocks)

Front and rear brakes, hubs, calipers and rotors (outer CV joints on rear)

Fuel tanks with pump(s) and flexible lines uncut

Radiator w/fans and plastic shroud

Wiring harness w/engine, throttle control, & ignition sections

Wheels and tires

Minor Components/Parts 1997-2004 Corvette C5

Tilt steering column w/stalks and Ignition switch

Flexible brake lines- calipers

Radiator fill tank

Wiper motor

Oxygen sensors (4)

Side & rear view mirrors

Exterior door handles and door window mechanisms

Seat belts

Vehicle speed sensor

E-brake handle/cables, Gas pedal

Hood latches w/ cable actuator

Other Components/Parts

Porsche Transaxle Parts from 1990-1998 2-wheel drive 911 models

Porsche G50 or G50 variant transmission including clutch disk, pressure plate, throw-out bearing, inner CV joints and starter.

My build is going good so far... Just getting all the little stuff organized so I can get the larger stuff going. Its all about the detials... Everytime I think I get everything setup on paper the way I want it, I change my mind on something and it changes like 10 different things. But thats just how it goes when your building something from scratch.
