Computer people... Help please...

OK, something changed on my settings over the last 24 hours on my computer and I dont know how I did what or how to get it back. Now everytime I want to change the name of a file I have to put .jpg,.xls,ect... after it otherwise to auto converts it to a useless file ( wether its a pic or a spreadsheet ). Any ideas or anyone have this happen to them?

Thanks

So XP. I haven't used that in a long time but I'm on Vista and if I delete the extension tag (.jpg, .exe, etc) the file becomes unusable as well. The easiest way to deal with this is to not delete the extension tag when you change the file name.

SOmetimes I go through and relabel a hundred files at a time as I finish projects ( which I did yesterday ) and it gets annoying having to remember to type the file extension in everytime or the file becomes junk. Theres got to be some way to fix this...

John, if you go to start>accessories>system settings>system restore you can restore the computer to the way it was a couple days ago without losing any files.

So if I restore it back to mid last week ( just to be safe ) I wont lose any of the spreadsheets or anything I have made in the last couple days? Cause if there is a possibility it will I cant risk it as it would set me back 40 hrs in work.

open my computer. hit the alt key and then click on tools - Folder options. click on the view tab. under there, you'll want to look for a reference to hid extensions. make sure that is checked.

That setting is what shows file extensions and forces them.

If that don't work, let me know.

Doing a system restore doesn't change, delete or otherwise affect any documents or files on your computer, it just restores the computer settings.

You dont need to do a system restore!!!

Just turn back on the "Hide extensions for known file types"
Start>My computer>Tools>View>Hide extensions for known file types

Besides, system restore probably wont fix your problem.

EDIT: Damn Legion just got me.

hey, you knew where my computer was. i've had a client start yelling at me because he wanted to know, "How in the hell he was supposed to click on my computer?" i'll admit, it took me a minute to figure out he literally meant the computer i was at and not his.
