All these suggestions to open it up and extract drives and whatnot is NOT where the problem lies. You have a corrupt file in your registry...all you need to do is fix that one file. Boot from a live version of linux and you'll have access to all your files without having to open the computer at all. From there you can replace any corrupt file and be on your way

I have no experience with Linux but if it keeps you from opening up your computer, that would be the better option. I have my computer open on a weekly basis for a good cleaning so it's nothing new to me and the cd drive went bad in my old laptop so I had to remove that in order to boot it up (never buy Alienware laptops, 2 of them have crapped out on me).

Do what safi suggested first, I'm just assuming hardware failure since you said this happened after the cover was slammed down. My first guess would be that the hard drive skipped on a pin and it scratched the disk.

Here is the download link
Download Ubuntu | Ubuntu

Download and burn to a disk. Boot from it, then when you get the option you should be able to choose "Try ubuntu without any changes to your computer"

From there you will be able to fix any corruptions you may have

Baker, if you're around the Denham Springs or Baton Rouge area I can take a look at it for you.

From the sounds of it, it's probably the hard drive or a corupted windows files. If the notebook is using a sata hard drive, it will fit into a typical sata desktop pc. From there you should be able to recover files as long as the hard drive isn't bad. Once you've done that, you can attempt to reload windows. If it barfs at you while doing it, it's time for a new drive.

Honestly, if I wasn't somewhat knowlegable on computers, most of the above advice would go over my head.

Most do not know what safe mode is, nor do they know what sata means, nor do they know how to diagnose a broken hard drive. Hence the reason for companies like the geek squad.

Baker, if you want, pm me your number. I'll try to walk you through some of the basic checks

^ what he said

Here's a basic idea what you can do to either backup your files or if you can pull that file missing in your Vista CD, you can install it manually in that directory by using Ubuntu.

Use Ubuntu Live CD to Backup Files from Your Dead Windows Computer :: the How-To Geek

If you get stuck I can help out ^^

Linux FTMFW!

Oh and to burn an ISO file just use "burn Image/Project" in whatever burner software you use. should fit a blank CD.

put in your vista disk and select repair windows after you boot to it. it usually will fix it right up.
