Computer problem..... wont start up....

I get a solid blue screen on Farrah's laptop whenever i try to start it up. Its a solid blue screen that says something about being corrupt, missing, or something else.

What does this mean?

Its windows vista if that matters.

sounds like a hardware issue. I had a dell that would do that because of a bad DVD player.

look at the numbers near the bottom of the screen and tell me what they are (should be the numbers that begin with "0x")

to be honest with you..... she was using it and then i pissed her off and she slammed it shut and it locked up or something. I restarted it and then this happened. and ive tried to restart it about 6 times to no avail.

Are you running 4gb of RAM? I'm seeing what I can find for fixes short of a system restore and it seems most people having this problem on Vista are running 4gb of RAM (most in 1gb sticks) and removing 1 stick will take care of the problem but reinstalling it bring them back to the BSOD (which is what the blue screen you have is called).

Ok first try booting in safe mode. Hit the power button and start tapping F8 for a while. If you come to the BSOD (blue screen of death), you didn't get in with safe mode. In that case, flip your computer over, remove the panel covering the back (screwed on with pretty small screws most likely), take a picture, and let's see what you've got in there.

If it isn't a warrenty claim they will buttsecks you hard on trying to fix anything. Best thing to do is if you want a pro to look at it, is to find an idependent computer shop.

Do not recommend taking it apart....

Did tapping f8 bring you to a menu to choose safe mode? If not then you have a bigger problem. Personally what i would do is download a live version of linux, burn it to a disk, and boot from it so you can access your files and fix the corrupted file

Ouch, sounds like the blue screen of death. Pull out the drive, connect it to another computer as a secondary, pull the information off of it so you don't lose your documents, and then run a diagnostic to see if the drive is broken. If it is, then replace the drive and reinstall windows. If not, recover the factory settings from the restore partition.
