For those with multiple dogs.

Ok, So I have been thinking about getting my Dog Jack a pet puppy for christmas cause he spends alot of time home alone while Im working or gone. So I was thinking that he would really like to have someone around that he could constantly play around with.

For those who have multiple dogs do you regret getting the second dog or has it been a huge hassel?

I had my pomerian and my hybrid wolf. Loved that they had each other when I'm not home 50+ hours. This of course was at my old apartment.

You never regretted getting any of the additional ones? Im just not sure I want to go through all the puppy crap agian.

But I found this adorable lab/dalmation mix at one of our local shelters.

<-- Gets all his dogs from local humane societies and shelters.

i love it. i had just the one for a couple years. i was like you and decided he needed a friend. it just seems to me that both of them like having a friend around when i'm at work or out. granted, they probably just sleep all day anyways, but i like knowing that they can play

My first one came from the shelter. black/brown lab mix. my shar pei actually came up from georgia. she's a southern gal.

I don't think anyone who loves dogs, and can afford to have more than 1 would really regret it.

Aside from having to train another one, once all that's done, I don't think it's much different than just having one....other than they get to play with each other.

For the most part, they go out at the same time, eat at the same time, sleep at the same time. Once my finances settle down, I'll be getting a brother or sister for Kaya. She has a TON of energy, and there's times that I'm just not able to play with her. I know another dog definitely will though.

I have to say Im very surprised that everyone is posative on this. I expect a few to show up and say things about how its a hassel to find a place for two when you go out of town, or how much more it is in food and vet bills, ect...

Thanks guys, I apreciate the comments and has deifnitally made me a little more comfortable about picking another one up.

REPS for you getting your dogs from shelters! (actually when I tried to give you reps it said I had to spread it around, which is weird because I don't remember giving you reps recently. )

I recently got a puppy,( 2nd dog) and yes, it is a pain in the ass, but its totally worth it, take your dog down to the shelter and have them play together, make sure they get along well.
( shelters encourage this, sometimes it is a requirement, but not always)

The biggest problem for me was potty training, and that only took me two months, yeah sounds like a long time but its really not, but I work from home, so I was able to let her out every two hours to potty, then I would make a big deal about it when she went outside, lots of praise and a treat, and when she went inside she would get scolded.

I have 2 dogs, a 85 pound mutt-mix (Sheba) and a Jack Russell Terrier (Milo). I got the JRT to keep Sheba company. They are outside dogs, but we were afraid Sheba would eat Milo or something because he was so small when he was a puppy. We kept him in the house until he was bigger.

When we finally put them in the yard together, it seemed they would only play rough when we were out there with them. Milo usually instigated it. He would run by and growl at Sheba and run off again, and she would get mad and try to grab him.

LOL... one time Milo tried to get out of the yard and run off... Sheba pinned him down with her mouth until we could grab him.

They don't play rough very much anymore, but they are pretty much inseparable.

The jump from 1 dog to 2 dogs is no where near as involved as 0 dogs to 1 dog; you've already got all the dog stuff, the house is already dog-proofed, and you're already in the habit of maintaining a dog.

I'm one of the people that advocates AGAINST getting a puppy. There's a lot of older shelter dogs out there that can't find homes because of the people that insist on getting puppies. Older dogs are almost always trained, and they'll have a sense of appreciation for being rescued from the pound (Seriously, pound dogs KNOW what you've saved them from, puppies not so much).

Both of my dogs are older rescues, picked up my lab when he was about 2, and my half-pug a year later when she was about 3. My lab had some behavioral problems when I got him, but once he realized he was in a stable pack that had a stable alpha (me), he calmed right down.

Yeah I have 2 as well, they are actually from the same parents just a year apart. Mutts to the extreme sense of the word. Prolly 4 or 5 diff. breeds mixed. Mostly shepard/chow though. They are both males, but fixed, but they do get rowdy at times. If I was stricter on them about it I don't think they would, they are incredibly smart animals. I just keep them in crates when I'm gone for multiple hours. As everyone said, they'll get onto the same clock once the new pup is trained so feeding, bathroom, etc. is pretty much the same. I think that especially if you are away from home as you said for work and what not like I am its nice that they have another breathing creature with them. Dogs do get lonely, I've seen it. I say if your finances and living arrangements can handle another dog then do it. (Since you are a previous owner of an AM I doubt either of those are an issue). I say go for it!
