I really thought I was going to die last night
Kind of a long story...
So last night before bed I had a tension headache...hurt pretty bad in my shoulder and up my neck. So I go to get some Tylenol and my wife says "why dont you try these...they are for migraines". So I proceed to take three of these migraine tablet and TRY to go to bed. Well the tension headache goes away but I am tossing and turning and cannot get to sleep. 11pm rolls around, 12am, 1am etc etc Finally at 2am my heart starts feeling like someone is stepping on it and I am wide awake at this point. My heart beat feels really weird and it just feels like its in a vice. About 2:30 after much deliberation that I think I am "on my way out" I remember I took these migraine pills I havent taken before...coincodence?? I think not I go check what is in them and there is Caffeine in them...WTF!!!!! First I am not a coffee drinker and I quite drinking soda 3 weeks ago so I can only guess that my body was not used to caffeine anymore and taking these 3 pills at once just "shocked" my system/heart. So then I take 2 sleeping pills and sleep for roughly 5 hours and wake up and my heart still feels weird FML And just a side note...yesterday was exactly 10 years since my wife and I first met...maybe she had enough and knew was she was doing Last edited by 87FloridaGT; November 20th, 2009 at 10:11 AM. |

sounds like you took Excedrine Migraine. I rarely drink soda, and I take them. Caffeine can actually get rid of headaches, but that headache may have been a caffeine withdrawel headache, and the Excedrine just threw it all out of whack. The low dose of Caffeine in them shouldn't be enough to make you think your gonna die.

Did you take more than the recommended dose? That could be an issue. Better keep a close on watch on how your heart feels and if you need to, see a doctor immediately. Almost sounds like the beginning of a cardiac arrest. You may have had a small one. Any other symptoms? Like weird feeling in the rest of your chest and arm?

? What if that would have been something you were allergic to you wouldnt be posting right now....Second your talking about your heart hurting your shoulder hurting and your neck, then you say it felt like someone was stepping on your heart... Dude I am pretty sure you had a heart attack (not cardiac arrest they are completely different) but I am quite sure you may of had a heart attack maybe doc can clear it up. We were just going over this in class... Your heart felt weird how so? Like it was going to slow to fast or can you try to explain because its possible your electric stuff in your heart had a accident and threw your heart out of whack and some how it set it self back... |

I am only allergic to penicillin (sp?) so I knew I wouldnt be allergic to what I was taking. 2nd my wife said it was migraine medicine so I took it...I did not know however that it had caffeine in it.
My heart felt like it was going too fast at one point...my arm and chest did not feel tingly or numb so I am pretty sure it was not a heart attack. I really think it was because I just got done getting all the caffeine out of my system and then just shocked my system with it. The last time I was at the doctor she said I had the blood pressure of an athlete and that my heart sounded great I do blame myself for not looking what was in the pills though Last edited by 87FloridaGT; November 20th, 2009 at 10:50 AM. |

Also if it felt like it was going to fast it could be because obviously the caffeine and you had tachycardia heartbeats over 100bpm, so thats why your heart felt weird. Cardiac arrest is where your arm and shoulder feel numb and tingly. A heart attack, 90% of people who have a heart attack feel it but rub it off on its indigestion or something else, its like the heart just having a accident and most people push it off like its nothing which heart attack with obviously lead to cardiac arrest eventually.. Just saying man you may what to call your doc and tell her what happened see what she says. Again when doc gets nonlinear if I am wrong he can clear it up but we had a test on this and I aced it

I appreciate the advice and if it gets worse I will call the doctor but I seem to be leveling out.
I think it was just the pills...it would be too big of a coincodence that I took those for the first time and then this happens on the same night What can you prescribe for a swollen/erect penis though? |

If you eat a lot of fast food the grease could be clogging up your veins in your heart and its beginning to get harder and harder for your heart to pump blood ie. the minor heart attack (heart accident) you had. Remember man that could lead to a serious problem..Cardiac Arrest, it could be your life.. |

If you find out it was Excedrine Migraine...don't take 3. Take 2. That coulda been your problem right there with your heart wanting to explode on you with everything else going on.

I have a chronic problem with blah blah blah Supraventricular Tachycardia. I can get them for no reason whatsoever. Sometimes when I drink a ton of caffiene, I dont get them at all. Other times, I bend over to pick something up or get the "hiccups" and it throws me into massive palpatations. I used to get scared when it happened but not anymore at all.
You may have just over stimulated your heart. The problem with this is that when it happens it is also accompanied by very high blood pressure at the time. This can cause damage to artery walls or even the muscles of your heart. worse case scenerio is that you have a stroke or massive cardio inFARTion and die. Your fine now so hopefully you didnt damage anything. |

For me, my resting heart rate is about 51 bpm. That's abnormally low; my doctor told me I have orthostatic hypotension... low blood pressure upon standing, leg blood vessels don't contract like they should, and all my blood runs to my feet, depriving my brain of oxygen. Every time I stand up I have to do it slowly and carefully or else I could pass out. I passed out once at home and once in church when I was about 14. That was before I knew what was going on. Anyway, my point: caffeine will not significantly raise my heartrate. I can chug a monster drink and still have a low heartrate. But if I drink alcohol, my heartrate gets a lot faster. After drinking, I can lay in bed for a while and my heart will still be beating fast, and it won't slow down until the next day sometime. I would consult a doctor..

Tiller you are spot on. If someone told me they took a bunch of caffeine and then their shoulder, neck, and heart hurt, I'd have layed them down on the floor and called 911. That his heart still hurts is really troubling and he should get his tail to the doctor ASAP just to be safe. And your description of an MI vs cardiac arrest was very accurate. He could've had a small heart attack by way of a temporary clamping down of the small arteriols. This would have decreased oxygen to that small area of the heart enough to cause pain but not do any long term damage. If some bigger arteries upstream clamped down a bit, the pain would cover a larger part of the heart and surrounding area. Heart pain is felt in areas other than the heart because of the vagus nerve. I haven't read enough to understand the particulars on why the brain seems to misinterpret the data delivered by the vagus nerve, but a good example is brain freeze. The diagnosis for what you are probably talking about is stable angina or unstable angina. Stable angina is not nearly as big a concern as unstable angina. I'm certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
Poster, dude, just to be safe, go see your physician. And for the sake of the rest of our blood pressures, don't tell us the next time you take three tablets of something unfamiliar from someone who says, "Try this!" Especially if she's your beneficiary.
