Your disk is toast like you said. The sticker contains all the data. Once it's scratched, it's done.

He was being sarcastic. There is no data on the sticker side of the disc. You could rip the entire sticker off and it would still play like new. I vote for swaping it with a blockbuster copy as well or you could go to your local CD store as they do CD repairs there... Would be worth a shot to see if they think its fixable or not ( plus its only like $5 ).

No, I wasn't being sarcastic. Unless it's a DVD the data is on the sticker side (DVD data is sandwiched between 2 plastic layers, CDs aren't).

Basically, you have 4 layers on CDs. Print (this is the actual sticker), lacquer, data, and plastic. The print, lacquer and data layer are very delicite and if you scratch one you're most likely going through all of them down to the plastic. If there's a scratch through enough that he's covering it up w/ a marker then he's gone through all these layers.

Now, I believe he said it was for PS3? I'm not sure if that's the way it is for BR but that's how it is for xBox games.

oh... But I know for a fact that this isnt the case. If you take apart a PS3 or Xbox ( or any other type of CD reader ) the laser is on the bottom side of the disc, not the top...

I thought Blu-Rays were claimed to be impervious to scratchs. Maybe this isnt the case, but I could swear I red when blu-rays were first out that you could scratch them up as much as you wanted and they would still play flawlessly.

the reflective layer is where the data is stored, and is read by the laser going through the cd (because its clear plastic) from the bottom...

What he is saying is basically if you go take a screwdriver and scrape it across the TOP (sticker side) of a CD/Game/etc. you will take the data off. The plastic it self is over the true data. The laser reads through the plastics.

Yes, this is what I'm trying to say. The laser is on the plastic side and reads through it. When you scratch the plastic side, you cause the laser not to scatter and it doesn't get any reading from the reflection.

You can scratch a Blu-Ray but they are MUCH harder to scratch than a DVD or CD.
