is there anyway to wipe out all the extra shit that the factory(Gateway) installed on vista??

why is my cpu making clicking sounds. (model number GM5420) could it be a fan problem or maybe the hard drive??

why the hell are there 80 processes running on my computer??

what is one of the best virus protectors today. i have mcafee, comes with comcast and im not to fond of it. anything else out there besides norton. hows AVG??

Get a version of your operating system straight from the manufacturer, reformat and load that version onto your computer. That way all of Gateways programs aren't on there.

clicking sounds? is it a new computer?

Because gateway loaded a lot of shit onto your computer.

I use... (going to check)... AdAware SE personal (the free version I downloaded). It works well, but you have to pay to get the full version.

do what 2000si said

or ->-remember what i said in ur orig thread re: ur comp?-<- go into msconfig (start > run : msconfig) and click the right-most tab, and uncheck anything u dnt need

and anti-viruses suck... they just slow down ur PC.. just use bazooka daily... its a malware scanner... it doesn't protect u as much as show you how to completely remove viruses... but i would suggest using a freeware anti-virus along with bazooka....
(or switching to linux) for a noob, i would suggest ubuntu

I wouldn't mess around in msconfig because honestly it's one of those things where if you have to ask for help, you shouldn't screw with it. It may make a mess of things.

It's really late and I started to type all this out, but just contact me privately and I'll help out. I prefer AIM (mikebert99) or MSN ( mikebert AT uga DOT edu, replace words with symbols). You can try PM here to get my attention though .. .

I checked back on here to see if there was a response from the topic creator and I just realized that 2000Si appears to be the resident computer nerd of MM. I haven't checked, but he's got to be the only one with a civic listed as his cruising vehicle. I think it's a pretty hilarious coincidence.

I'd suggest downloading the individual drivers from gateway or the manufacturer and burn them on a disk. then burn/nuke/crush/throw away the ones that came with the gateway (except the vista install disk) lol.

Then install vista and the new drivers and wammo! a fresh install with none of the gateway crap.

I use mcfee, Norton and sygate. They only slow down your pc if you dont know what your doing when you configure it all.

Open the case and turn on the pc and listen to find out what's maken the noise. If it happens when the pc is thinken it could be a loose drive or the fan isn't properly synced. With pc's the problem could be anything..

don't mess with msconfig, regedit or anything else if your not computer literate or trained to mess with it.

But the best tech tip I can give is....if it isn't worken properly, kick it untill it does.
