Almost at 100k Miles!

Hello everyone, this is my first post here on these forums, and I figured there was no better place to ask my questions.

I was in the market for a new car a few weeks ago. I had been looking at Subaru's, mainly the WRX and Legacy models. Well, I was test driving a Subaru WRX and a woman driving a 2007 Jeep Cherokee cut into my lane and hit me head on at 50mph. For some reason the desire to get one seemed to be knocked out of me at that moment. The WRX looks like a little toy, it's just too short in length. I have a 99 Silver Ford Mustang, 3.8 v6. I went to my mechanic with new intentions; rather than bringing him new/used cars to look over for defects, I started talking to him about bringing my 99 Stang to new life.

Here are a few things he mentioned we could do:

My clutch has been going for awhile and obviously needs replacement, he mentioned a new Brute force short throw shifter might add some more joy to my drive.

My engine computer may need some updates, and there is also the possibility of reprogramming it for more torque/hp. Giving the car a little more umph.

I have noticed that when I idle, my RPMs bob dangerously low, it almost seems as though I am going to stall out. He said my Master airflow controller needs to be replaced. Not sure if there is anything here that can add performance, but at least it would remedy the issue.

I passed along the notion of a supercharger, he seemed to thing it could blow out the bottom end. That didn't sound too intriguing, so I doubt I'll push the issue.

Anyway, what I am getting at is that I'd like to replace major components to extend my cars life while possibly making the car a little more fun. Granted I was about to trade this puppy in and also start picking up payments of 300+ a month for a few years, I think I can throw some money around.

What do you guys think?
PS. I've added a pic of the WRX.

you don't need to update the computer. Get a tuner and get a performance tune. nearing 100k miles and you want a s/c forge your internals and you will have no problems. What kind of numbers are you looking for and what is you price range.

even with a brand new engine i would recommend forged internals with any type of FI application.. its much better to be safe and know your engine wont blow... also as per the topic, i would agree with GreenFaleen and get a flash tuner, the SCT X-Cal 2 is the best on the market, second only to the new SCT Livewire. also as faleen said, let us know your price range and the type of performance you are looking for, so we can better guide you

ive talked to tomzac ont the notice of the s/c and some guys at boosted mustangs....they said forge ur interals only if ur going to be pushiong 300+ hp to the rw's....but ur gonna need a engine rebuild badly...forged internals are only there for re insurance and imo arent worth it unless ur breaking 300rwhp.....

Price range

I'd prefer to stay between 2,000-2,500 on parts AND labor. Which likely narrows the field a bit, and rather than get more parts for less, I'd rather get higher quality and less parts (if that makes sense). The idea of a short throw shifter has me pumped, but I doubt I'll see a real performance increase, it will just be more fun.

I'd like to take the car from 190hp to maybe 240-265'ish, the latter being the favorable :-)

And dude! You sure gave that telephone pole a kiss, I hope your injuries have healed. My knee is the only thing still bothering me, I must have nailed it right on the dash.
