No reason to get a CCW if you are trying to be a cop if your in an open carry state. By working with PD well at least in my area they give you a CCW. You will more than likely carry a 9mm so find a 9mm you like, and go to the range. One of the biggest reasons why someone will not pass the academy is they can not qualify on the gun range. I'm filling out paperwork for a ride along coming this Tuesday, and from there I will be training to completely without a doubt pass the entrance exam, and then off to the range more to make sure I can qualify on the gun range.

You can go to a gun store/range and check out what they have. Shoot a couple and see what you like. Theres alot of guns you can get for $350.

I was just getting it cuz I figured it would look good on a resume, not like it matters yet since the whole fucking states on a hiring freeze, phoenix let go of i think 250 cops so far. But I didnt know people suck at shooting that bad, I guess its a good idea to buy one and practice

Of course it is a good idea. Shooting isn't hard, but it's all in the technique. Small adjustments I'm learning. Right now I'm shooting too far to the right. I'm a left handed shooter with a right eye dominance. I'm using too much or too little of my trigger finger. It will be a good idea, but all guns are different. So how you shoot with one gun, will be slightly different than another. Especially if you haven't used it before so what you get, and what you will be issued will be different. But practice is always a good idea. My area hasn't done a freeze yet, but there has been a cut of 1500 officers state wide. The department that is looking at me is very very hard to get into right now. I'm using it as time to get ready so that I can prove myself to be better than the others.

Check your local ranges and practice with what they have in their rental case. I am not sure what your market is like out there, but you can find good 1st and 2nd generation Glocks, and Berettas in your price range if you look. You can also look in to used Taurus PT92's as well. The used gun counter is your friend.

More than likely, if it's a semi large city it will be a Glock in 9mm, .40 or .45. You just need to go ask at a precinct some time. Explain to them that you are planning on applying and you need to purchase a handgun (some agencies do issue handguns too...) to practice with and go from there. As with all things Law Enforcement, if you dont have your heart set on one agency, apply to a whole slew of them. A lot of larger cities will have their own academies, but some of the smaller LE agencies will run through the state. If you dont mind the smaller cities that go through the state academies, then pay yourself into the academy before ever applying to an agency if they will let you. No matter what way you look at this, you'll leave with your accredidation and you can apply to basically any PD and in most cases will skip over through all the extra BS and they'll hire you as a transfer. I know in Nebraska, to pay your own way to the Academy is like 8000$ but it's 8000$ that'd be well worth it in my mind if I were going for a smaller agency. Also, keep your job you are at now. The application cycles for some agencies are REALLY long. The Omaha Police Department, to which I applied to the process is over a year long. I applied last January and I am just now getting to the rest of the process. I actually took my Polygraph yesterday and passed so the entire process is still fresh in my mind ![]() If you have any questions pertaining to the process, I can give you information but it may or may not apply to the agencies you are applying for.

I'm a big fan of my Springfield Armory XD9SC. I can't say I've ever seen one used though, but I'm also in a small market.
