well a desert eagle .50 cal might be too large or a grip for my hands. as i said before, ima small guy standing at 5'4. ill look around for 300+ mag guns and see my options.

i was prev stationed on kodiak island and loved it. also, my wife is from there, my son was born there, and my in-laws live there. i want to get stationed on a cutter so ill be gone 6 months out of the year. it will be easier on my wife and kids with the in-laws living there also.

no my wife is not an eskimo. there are no eskimos on Kodiak Island. my wife and her family are white americans lol.

i was reading through a thread posted about the same topic as the one i made on an alaska forum. some said to stay away from handguns, some said a 357 or 44 would be fine, and others said a 500 mag with a 4 1/2 inch barrel woudl work fine. the 500 mag short barrel is prolly what ill be looking into

A .454 Casull or .500S&W revolver would be the smallest caliber I would feel comfortable with.

A .45-70 rifle or a 12ga would be your best bet though.

Well what ever you get make sure you grind the front sight down to a smooth finish so it doesn't hurt so much when that bear shoves it up you butt lol... no you should get a desert eagle but i think a can of bear spray would be cheaper plus its got a fifty foot range if your pistol false its a last ditch effort before you can kiss it good by lol

^ i made that one up on my own lol
well if you still haven't made up your mind got to taurus's web page to to the revolver's and there you'll find several sized revolvers and you search around but if you have small hands there's a 454 with a 2 1/2 inch barrel but like i said you should look in to bear spray as well

please dont listen to most of the ignorant statements in here. go try out a short barreled .460 s&w revolver. it is a very large revolver, but it will kill a bear if you can hit it. it is easily packable in a small backpack, or a large fanny pack while hiking.

the .500 is the biggest, but the .460sw is the best killing round. its has more enrgy to transfer and has the same weight bullet going faster. it has a lot of recoil, but its the best hunting handgun cartirdge for a reason. load it up with some hornadys and be done with it, and practice practice practice. i promise if you ever need it, its going to be a life or death situation, and you better be able to handle it.

do a little research on those two calibers. your best bet is the .460 or a .500 in the smaller barreled version. they are lots of fun!!!! and they are snappy as hell
