the idiots "I" work with....

Do you reccomend beating on a tie rod end with a sledge hammer to get a stuck tie rod end out of a hub?

I was at work yesterday supervising the guys in my section changing out a outer hub seal on a HMMWV, when the tie rod end was stuck in the hub. Ofcoarse this company im in is totally retarded and there is no Pickle forks available so i had to come up with other ideas. Rather than beating on an aluminum tie rod, or cast iron hub, I told the completly stumped guys in my section, to put the castle nut back on leave some room for the tie rod to move up a bit, put a socket on the castle nut and hit the socket with a mallet. So they follow my directions, and start doing it. My motor Sgt., comes up grabs the mallet out of the guys hand and asks who told him to do that. They all point at me. He just looked at me and addressed the whole group saying "the next time i see someone beating on a socket with a hammer im going to beat them with it". Notice we were using a MALLET! Not a hammer. He grabs a Ballpeen hammer and starts beating on the tie rod end! It does pop out, but the tie rod end cracks, and needs to be replaced. He doesnt notice, but when it came up out of the hub he stood up with a sense of satisfaction smiled at me and walked away.

As soon as he went around the corner, i told them all "Do not ever do what he just did". They all gave me this glazed look until i pointed out the tie rod end.

I go through shit like this everday, out ranked by complete morons. But i just keep my mouth shut 90% of the time and tell myself, ONLY 6 MORE MONTHS TO GO.

If no pickle fork is available beating on the sides of the tie rod end is the only alternative method that I know of that won't cause damage to the tie rod end. Use a hammer on each side and hit the sides at the same time. It will pop out almost as easy as it does with a pickle fork.

Re: the idiots "I" work with....

Well aslong as your not beating the shit out of it i suppose its ok, but he hit it so hard it cracked and if we teach younger soldiers to do this, what happens when this vehicle rolls out on a mission and fails to complete the mission? Yeah the maitenance team gets ripped a new asshole, and if in combat it could mean life or death possibly. I wouldnt do it on my personal vehicle tho.

Not to make fun of you but this is the kind of moron you get when you only need an ASVAB score of 29..... and I think that will waiver 5 points of that.....
