They used to be made by Studebaker back in the early '60s. Since then a few different companies have been trying to play on the name with different variations of the car.

I have a book with some info in my library, as soon as I find it I'll post some info.

When you have a Ford Ranger packing a turbo 4-cylinder, all you can do is park in the back of the car show and realize that you're one-of-a-kind.

I found my book on it, but it only goes into detail about the Studebaker Avanti. Keep in mind any of the Studebaker versions are very rare and HIGHLY sought after by collectors. The bodywork was fiberglass and the Avantis were the first American cars to ever feature front disc brakes.

The 1963 and 1964 models kind of blend together and there are no truly specific '63 or '64 models. The R1 featured a basic 289 V8 (Sudebaker had their own motors, it was in no way related to the Ford 289) making 240hp, it was deemed to be relatively unexciting because it was upstaged by its big brothers.

The R2 came with the same 289 motor but featured a Paxton SN-60 centrifugal blower on top; it made 289hp and 330ft-lbs (keep in mind that a 1:1 hp:cid ratio was not something seen on many street cars in '63 and '64).

The R3 was like an R2 on steroids. It featured the same supercharged V8 punched out to a 304 with a higher compression ratio, the cam timing increased 16 degrees, dual valve springs, ported heads, forged pistons, tuned port exhaust manifolds, a tach that went up to 8000RPM, and 335hp. Only 10 were made.

The R4 had the same 304 V8 without the blower but with the same heads and pistons. Instead of the blower it featured a 12:1 CR, another 12 degrees of cam timing, and dual carbs. It made 280hp and was only put in one car.

There was also an experimental R5, it was an R3 (already on steroids) that was also on crack. It had dual superchargers and fuel injection, although not much else is truly known about it. It is rumored to have developed in excess of 575hp and to have 196mph on the salt flats (in 1964, that f***ing FAST!).

The Avanti R2 and R3 smashed 337 different speed records in 1963, including breaking 29 different records in 12 hours with a single R3 (with some runs AVERAGING over 170mph). At the time, Studebaker was a maker of economical cars for the middle-aged (in other words, more boring than a Lexus RX350). So for them to come out and do this would be the modern equivalent of Kia randomly announcing that they designed a car faster than the Bigatti Veyron and they did it with a 4-cylinder using 4 turbochargers. It was just an act against nature.

They look like an old Study, smashed a Camaro, and this is their mutant love child. There were a couple of them rolling around here. There was also a dealer in Cancun but it closed down about a year or two ago. Seriously a LOT of the parts, and body lines look just like an old catfish style camaro...they are definately different.....

If you think the Avanti look weird, I got one worse for you. This thing is a rolling chunk of poor aesthetics. It's called the Zimmer, and it takes ugly to whole new level.

It looks like a Duesenberg mated with a mid-'80s Lincoln.

That's because they were basically rebodied Camaros. The last gen Avanti is exactly the same as 4th gen Camaro.
