Should the newer Intel CPU's make noise?

My friends newer i3 or i5 machine makes a lot of clicking noises when the processor is "thinking" I knew the older Intel's did this but I thought they would of fixed it in their newer processors. It's not the hard drive and that's the only videos I can find online. My old AMD dual core is WAY quieter and he spent a fuck load more $$$ on his build than I did.

This is the closest video I can find for the clicking noise.

He did say it shut off all of a sudden one day, but the temperatures looked fine while I was using it.

Not sure if he should spend the monies and get a better heat sink

I have an i5 laptop and its makes quiet clicking noise, but even if i'm typing you cant hear it so I'm never worried about it. My old Intels used to be really loud as they got older though

Hmmm I've heard that clicking sound before on the i5 but when i researched about why it does it they say it is because of the hard drive.

I might try to turn indexing off and see If I have any thermal compound laying around and get a fresh layer on there.

Processors are silent; you are hearing the hard drive.

Ahh you're right. 0:15 in is exactly what it sounds like. I am use to the click of death or the ping noise, or a long whirring noise.

So why is my HDD so much more quiet than his?

Even on his work computer it makes that noise. Bad end user

there are no moving parts in a processor. You should hear no noise from it. The sound you are hearing is most likely the HDD.

Agreed, if a processor is making noise, it's flexing from extreme overheating. Which I've never heard of happening. Usually they just catch on fire when they;re that hot.

Its the hard drive. Now is there anyway to shut it up from doing that? I don't even hear mine.

For hard drive, the suggestion I stumbled upon from the laptop I use is to upgrade the firmware for the hard drive. I don't get the clicking sound.

How much ram does he have? To little ram will cause disk thrashing from over use of Pagefile usage.

that's something else that should blow my system out of the water but fails.

He has something like 6 or 8 GIG

I had to leave for class when I went over and fixed the boot order to at least start him up. I did not get to look at it that long.
