medical question

well, i in a little situation i never thought i be in. my grandfather kidney's are failing. since the last test, they getting worse. he is puttin goff the treatment stuff, but i had a little chat with him last night to get him to go. the dr's said he has to start the treatment process and test safe for a transplant. he raise me and is what i know as a father, so this is very important to me. i am the oldest grandchild, and i am first to test for compatibility. my sister has 2 girls and a marriage, hlaf brother too young.

what i need to know is:

what all is involved to get to transplant stage?

how long is typical wait time to see if his body would take to the transplant wether it be mine or another?

how much downtime is he/ are we looking at for recovery?

thanks man. he is wanting to go back home (mississippi) to do it, but i dont think the medical field is anywhere up to par as it should be. a lot of his health stuff started after his foot surgery, and they couldnt take care of somthing simple as that. i went and got him to bring him here to his old doctor that he used to see when he still lived here. he was able to get a lot of the little things fixed thankfully. if he wants to do it down there, i will test here, and do the surgery/recovery there. but i have to put notice in at work and the shop stuff as well.

Good luck man.

I can't answer any of your questions with accuracy either. but from what i understand recovery time for YOU should be about 2 to 6 weeks. Should be able to work after 2.

I could be wrong but i believe that is what they said to my grandfather when he had a kidney removed due to a spot in it that turned out to be cancer.

well he needs to start dyalisis ..(sp) i worked on a renal floor for a long time and ill tell you its a long haul but i saw people get better everyday. It will be hard for everyone involved but the sooner he starts it the better. As far as finding a match you will have to make sure that your blood types are compatable and all of that stuff so it would jsut be a matter of having tests run and getting the results. He has to be healthy enough to withstand surgery. He would be on meds to help his body to not reject the new organ but that is always a possibilty. If you are a match there would have to be tests run on both of you and dates set. Recovery simply depends on the body and can be anywhere from weeks to months. How old is he and how is his health besides just the renal failure? has he ever been on dyalisis? Are any of your other family memebers willing to get tested to see if they are capable of donating? the waiting list for organs grows everyday and the easiest way is to have someone in the family be selfless and donate. It is a huge decision because it means if you were to go into renal failure you would only have one kidney but its saving a life and one that is important to you. Even if you only add on a couple more years thats a thousand more possiblilities for memories to be made.

yes he will need to get dialisis in the time before he gets a transplant. he will have to be put on immunosuppressants and your blood has to match his so his white blood cells dont reject your kidney.

with 1 kidney he should obtain the capacity of 80% of both kidneys (a single kindey actually picks up the slack of both kidneys to an extent)

I dont like to be this guy, but how old is he? How is his health other then the kidneys? Is the kidney thing family curse?

All questions you need to ask yourself to be willing to do this, and if its worth it. I understand the love and how you feel about him. But you have to be smart at the same time.

Either way I hope the best to you both.

PS. My father may need a transplant also, and I dont know if I would be able to do it. Reasons you may ask, well 1 he dont take care of him self, 2 he has had 2 heart attacks and 5 stents, 3 he still smokes and drinks.

I cant stop myself from staying healthy and raising a healthy family over someone who will not take care of it. And Unfortunately not live much more then 10 years. (Im guessing)

He also has diabetes and copd, emphysema. Plus other crap.

he went to the dialisis place here for a test and a talk about the treatment. he was putting it off because thats just what we do, but i told him to get on it so he can be healthy enough for it. everyone in the family is willing to test for compatibility, but i am first for several reasons. i am now single and plenty healthy, my ex wife has my son and he will be taken care of, my sister has family and kids, half brother only 14, and my mom has enough going just to keeping up. he is only 66, just retired a few years ago. about the adding couple years, keep reading please.

the kidney issue isnt something genetic. just an issue that started from incompetent doctors that dont know how to prevent, isolate, or stop a spreading infection.

as far as is it worth. deffinately is. saving a life when realistically possible, or when its a child is always worth it.

as far as being smart about it etc, i am. i know he doesnt want us to do it, but he knows he would be in line to test for us if possible. if it were me, i wouldnt accept my family to go thru it and i would just deal with it till i was done. we still got to see where the treatments go, and how his health is. i see life as he does. if its only worth a couple years worth, me nor him see it as worth it. that has to be the hardest thing to type, but its the way we see it. he says he has seen life, lived it, made his choices, and now lived with them. i understand and see my life the same way. once he starts the treatments, we should see what its worth.

at 66 years of age he should be able to get quite some life out of it but keep in mind that if you give away your kidney you are giving away a LOT.

you basically can't drink worth a shit because you WILL trash it if you do. even though it can retain 80% of normal kidney function, overwhelming the kidney is still much easier and more deadly obviously.

please please please consider everything and take it VERY seriously, i know you want to help your dad but that doesnt mean you should go into this blindly or anything. consider all your options and everything. talk with the doctors, it is a big decision and i wish the best of luck to the both of you. youre a very big person to be doing this for him

i think in the end if he is healthy and you feel it is what you need to do you will be doing the right thing. It is selfless and amazing when someone donates some part of them to save a life expessially one that is so important and has influenced them so much. I hope it all works out for the best.

since i got the news, i pretty much quit drinking already. my family health is upstanding for the most part. only time there are any issue's is when the immune system is weakened by fighting an infection and allows for another to set in. this generally happens to the elders in the family, and usually not that often. his mom (great grand mother) is the eldest of the family and she just as mean as she ever been.

thanks. i hope to find out more when we go see the doctor. i will be going to see mine and see what/if there is anything i need to do in the mean time and get more info.
