So I told myself that if I didn't get a new hard drive for Christmas for my XBox 360 that I was just going to buy a new slim since my DVD drive is going bad. It keeps telling me that some games are dirty and are unreadable. Anyway, I got a new hard drive as a gift so I decided that i'm going to get a replacement DVD drive for ~30 rather than pay MS over $100 to fix it. It looks as though I have the BenQ DVD drive. I know that there are multiple DVD drives for the XBox 360. My question is, can you mix and match the drives or do you need to stay with the drive that is currently in your XBox?

I've seen where you can take the circuit board out and put it in the new drive with the old circuit board but I haven't ran across a video for the BenQ, only the Hitachi drives. If I replace a BenQ with a BenQ do I HAVE to flash the drive or can I replace the circuit board like the other manufacturers?

I'm basing my thoughts that I have a BenQ based on the shape of the tray, not by serial numbers on the drive.

Mack IDK about the drives i believe someone on here did replace theres tho.

Have you tried to clean the lens or do you know for a fact the DVD drive is bad. Mine had problems reading WAW for a week and i finally found my DVD lenc cleaner and it has worked ever since.

Before you pull out an old drive you will need to pull the key to the drive I'm pretty sure, otherwise you won't be able to put the new one in at all. Then your new drive will need to have that key flashed to it. Also be warned that any of this could possibly automatically flag your system for an xbox live ban.

I have an extra benq drive i bought to repair my brothers xbox. I got fairly frustrated cause my computer couldn't read the ID on the original drive so the new drive is just sitting. Ill sell you it for 20 bucks plus shipping. Its a easy process if you are able to pull the origional firmware off the drive.

From what I've been reading I pretty much have no chance to replace this thing. I'm not saying that I can't, I just don't have the parts/computer/skills to do it. I did this on my original XBox and it was a direct swap, but this is a lot deeper than that. I called my wife and she said she might be able to return the old hard drive. If we do that plus add in the cost of sending it to MS I'm getting very close to the cost of a new 360 Slim with a 250GB HD and a couple of games that I could sell to help recoup the cost. Plus I'd have a new warranty, WIFI, and an HDMI port.

I'm not getting Black Ops. I wasn't really a fan of COD MP anyway. I play it from time to time but I don't play it as much as Reach. Besides I am playing Mass Effect 2 right now, I still have Hot Pursuit to beat, got Fable 2, and Bioshock 2 for Christmas. That will keep me busy long time.

FYI the old Hard Drives will NOT work on the new xbox. Not even with a transfer cable.

Yeah. You can still transfer your info from the old HD to the slim HD though right?
