Career as automotive technician. Help please :)
Hi. I just graduated high school in december (early grad
). I've been thinking alot about my future lately, and everytime i think of something i might want to do, it ends up down the toilet and i always come back to something with cars. I've pretty much decided i want to be an automotive engineer or a technician (mechanic). My plan as of right now is to work full time through this year up until fall of next year and get my car paid off, and save up as much as i can for college. When fall comes around i plan on enrolling at UTI chicago and taking there 51 week auto/diesel core program, then following that up with the 15 week ford fasttrack program. After I'm done I'd like to get a job as a ford technician. I've been searching on the internet and the avg salary for a ford technician is around $40,000 a year. I know that's not going to put me in a mansion or anything, but as long as im happy and can get by that's all i'm worried about. How does that sound to you guys? Nothing is set in stone, obviously. Do you have any advice or suggestions? Any input you guys have is much appreciated

What is your current job status as far as...what are you doing now? I see nothing wrong with your plan in my opinion of what you've planed out, but it would be nice if you can land a job at a mechanic shop. Most will help you with your schooling. If its nothing but a Oil Technician. This will get your name around, get you working with customers to see how things are dealt with on a day to day routine. Plus, if your shops are like ours here in Hampton Roads, most Tool Sellers, *Snap-on, Mac, Macto* have trucks that come buy they sell tools too. This will get you ahead start getting to know them. Though if it was me when it came to tool time and I had to do it again, If you have a Sears/Craftsman dealer near buy, I highly recommend going that route as its Cheaper, Still a lifetime warranty on the tools. Sound like you know what you want and have a good head on your shoulders.
Hope the input helps, and am sure more people on the Mechanic side of the field. I was on the Auto Body side for about 5 years.

I went to UTI and did the Automotive + Ford F.A.C.T. One of the best learning experiences of my life. Got a job at a dealership before I even graduated. The only reason I am not still a tech is because I have such a good deal where I am at now. When I was laid off I was a double Ford Master Tech in both Gas and Diesel electronic engine diagnosis.

Bullshit! NEVER go to UTI. Go to your local community college with an auto program and get a darn degree. I can say this because I graduated from one of those high dollar tech schools, and truth be told MOST techs in the industry never went to one of these schools. Its all a lie. Do yourself a favor and get your degree in something automotive at your local CC and it'll not only be three times as cheap, it will also be a degree and not a certificate.
Guess where my certificate is for graduating one of those famed schools?.......In my Military service record, I spent 30 grand to get an auto E2 out of boot camp. If you really want to be an auto tech and learn the ropes of mechanics and something that will look great on a resume then you need to contact your local recruiter any branch of your choice. You can be an auto mechanic in any branch. Even the Navy, contrary to popular belief you are not always on a ship talk to them about being a Seabee CM (construction mechanic) you'll be an equipment mechanic. Or the Marines your can also be a heavy equipment/ diesel tech. Army and air force also offer the same route. Talk to them, not only will you get paid to go to school to learn mechanics, it will also look alot better then UTI to a shop and then after your 3 or 4 years you'll get a GI bill and you can go to college FOR FREE and get a degree. So now you'll have 4 years of experience being a diesel mechanic and a free ride to any college of your choice to further your education. And after that kind of leadership experience you may get a job offer in somewhere else making double the average salary for a Ford tech. Alot of companies will give prior service Military a great opportunity in their company, and you might not have to settle for 40 grand a year (which as long as your happy then thats good, but thats average and 40 grand really isnt that great of a wage to live on the rest of your life if you want to be comfortable) I mean hell you could use your GI bill to go to school for mechanical engineering and design diesel engines for Cummins or Caterpillar. The skys the limit man.

![]() $35k+ plus benifits was bullshit? LoL Its not all a lie. Five bucks says you had some friends that went to UTI didn't you? They hated it? Probably because they didn't go to learn....... Did you go to UTI Derrik? Bet not, so you have no room to talk. STFU.... I never worked at a shop in my life and was at the dealership TWO DAYS after I graduated. Is that bullshit as well? If you do well at UTI you have the chance to get into a program with BMW, Mercedes, Toyota, Ford and others. Can do that from a community college drick. You have hated on UTI before but you have NO FUCKING CLUE what you are talking about. Sure hands on experience will help. But UTI is NOT bullshit.... |

I haven't been jobless for an extended period of time I never even said that. Chill out your acting like the typical UTI graduate. Do they pay you to defend their college too?
No I went to Lincoln Tech. Same shit different place. And nothing I said in that post was bullshit or nor did I say it didn't work for you. Im saying that he will be debt free with MUCH more experience if he went into an auto mechanics route in the Military, and he said any opinion is accepted (even your biased bullshit rambling and yelling)

BTW hows 35K+ with benifits a good wage? I make alot more than that right now with full benifits and a fucking certificate from a tech school didn't even land me that job, Military experience and work experience landed me that job.
I dont even think they know I went to Lincoln Tech BTW lincoln tech is the only education I have so far. If you want to call it an education Why not go to a tech school and have it paid for by the government? And you get paid roughly 30 grand a year WITH FULL BENIFITS! instead of paying 30 grand

So you recommend he goes into the MILITARY just to get a education in mechanics? Like that is good advice? LOL!!! Sure if he wants to serve his country. More power to him. But he shouldn't go to the MILITARY to get a education in mechanics. Biased rambling or actual experience Drik? I work on race cars, have worked for a dealership, was actually master certified... What did or do you do Derrik? Berate my education all you want. Where did your's get you? Where did mine get me? I think that speaks for itself. Do you really need me to drag up the threads about you complaining about being jobless? |
