Chemically will acetone help promote combustion and improve gas mileage..short answer yes. It is an alcohol (acetyl alcohol to be exact) here is the issue, it is very hard on fuel lines and plastic components, will attack the oil film on engine components. Other than that you can practically drink it...lol

Very interesting. I looked quickly at the article and it claims that very small amounts of acetone improve vaporization of the fuel. The percentage of acetone is so low that it would be doubtful it could cause any harm.

The gains in fuel mileage reported can't possibly come from inproved vaporization unless they are claiming some 20-30% of the fuel is unburned without the additive. I'm quite sure that the percentage of unburned fuel is very small. So if I were reviewing the paper I would reject it outright, since it seems to violate the first law of thermodynamics. Possibly the presence of small amounts of oxygenated species has some catalytic effect which improves combustion efficiency, but that has been tried by adding ethanol and other oxygenated species such as MTBE. It wouldn't seem that it should work, but if people try it and see an effect it would certainly be interesting.

There is a research program here at Stanford looking at alternative fuels and perhaps I'll pass this by someone here.

In brief, sounds too good to be true.

I didn't read any of the links posted, but I'm still left wondering...

What is the first law of thermodynamics?

basically conservation of energy. So if essentially all the fuel is being burned already there is no extra energy to be obtained by a small improvement in combustion efficiency.

What I do know is that thermodynamic efficiency of an internal combustion engine increases with higher compression ratios so diesel engines are more efficient than gasoline engines, but that wouldn't be happening here.

I referred this to Prof. Heinz Pitsch who is an expert on combustion and fluid mechanics and is involved in a program to determine the thermodynamic efficiency of various fuels including oxygenated fuels.

everything has a downside to it. w/o exception. theres no such thing as something that can increase gas mileage like that w/o a downside.

engines that get good gas mileage hav no power. adding a turbo is expensive. adding this stuff is jus retarded. it will only affect mileage in damaging doses. wuts more important to u? couple bucks now? or a lot later?
