Machinist Question

I'm looking for a fairly quick answer since all our machinist went home at 2:30.

This is a shot in the dark here. But I know there's a lot of people on this forum that do a lot of different types of work.

Here's my issue. I'm looking at a government proceedure and it calls for a 3/4-10 UNC-2B tap. We have been using this and received feedback to determine if we have a GH5 tap because they're saying the threads are too sloppy. I checked and we have a GH3 tap.

From my understanding (NOT a machinist here), a GH3 tap will produce "tighter threads" than a GH5 tap. Am I wrong here? It seems to me that if we switch from a GH3 to a GH5 tap, it's going to make the slop worse.

Also, when a 3/4-10 UNC-2B tap is called out, does that allow you to choose any GH number? Or does that specify a GH number when the UNC-2B is called out?

If anyone knows, I would appreciate some help understanding. If no one here knows, I'll ask the machinist tomorrow.

The answer always comes down to the number 23. Hope this helps as theres not a lot of other input...

I'll keep that in mind. I think I'll just buy 23 different taps and tell them to choose one.

I didn't anticipate much response, but figured it was worth a shot and I might be able to get something together before I got off work. I didn't feel like joining a machining forum just to ask one question (especially since I'll get an answer tomorrow morning).
