Mixed Emotions Today
Today marks one of the ultimate miles stones a mother can reach with her kids. The day her first born "leaves the nest". We move him to Purdue in just a couple short hours.
He's been an amazing son. We've had some struggles and about come to blows a few times. But he graduated as class president for 5 straight years, Eagle Scout, strong in his convictions, witty, intelligent, caring. Couldn't be prouder of my boy. I have managed to hold it all together pretty well. Until yesterday. We got up early and hit the Walmart for all things "dorm". His cart was full of plastic, stackable drawers to store everything in his room. Mine stacked with things I knew he'd need - shampoo, shaving supplies, ramen noodles…when a well meaning lady spied us looking for easy things to make in a microwave, she said "Awww someone's moving away." I smiled and my son chuckled. "Yep, I'm going to college tomorrow." My heart beamed with pride and my eyes started to get a little misty. I quickly turned my thoughts back to food…have to be sure my baby has food in case he's missed his meal or doesn't have time to hit the food court. As he went off to grab a couple cases of soda, I went in search of Spagetti-O's. My boy loves em…. There they are - canned pasta…and suddenly as I thought about which type to grab, my emotions flooded from my toes all the way to my eyes and I stood there and bawled. I felt so silly. My son was just excited - "Livewire Mom! They have my Livewire!" "Mom?" "Aww Mom." I cried all the way up to the check out. I tried not to make eye contact with anyone, but I could see the people looking at me crying with my son trailing behind trying to keep his plastic stackers from falling out of his cart. We both started to silently unload both of our carts. My son, trying to do as much for me as he could since it was difficult for me to see through my tears. I caught a glimpse of the cashier. She knew what was going on. She didn't say a word. Just gave me a look that us Mom's give each other when we know exactly what the other is going through. As we were loading the carts back up, another lady behind us - who must have been placed there by God himself - said the most uplifting and encouraging words. I couldn't begin to tell you what she said, but it felt like God was speaking directly to me letting me know my baby would be just fine and assuring me that I must be a kind and loving mother to feel so emotional. I cried in the car. My son, took my hand and stroked it tenderly not knowing what to really say to make it better. All I could think was…"Your hands used to be so very tiny." I know this was really long….I just wanted to share what has been going on in my life. Feel like I've been absent but it's been because I've been raising my babies to be responsible adults. Livin' the dream. *wipes her tears* Please pray for us and all the families and students going off to college this year. Be they close or far, they aren't home every night. It's hard to know your baby is ok when you can't check on them every evening. I know I'll adjust - we all do. Doesn't make it any easier.

Its tough cause it is both exciting and sad to see your son go. Your tears are a good thing cause that is what all good mothers do. It wont be the last time you see him and hopefully the only time he comes to see you is to visit cause his life is full of success. Im the youngest son and probably the most rotten and I have seen my mom and dad cry alot. First when I left for school, and later when I deployed to iraq for the first time. Its ok to be emotional at these times cause as good of a son he is today is from how good of a mother you were yesterday.

He has an awesome mom, Ramen noodles, and Spaghetti-O's... What else could a guy ask for.. He will do grand.
My mom still cries when my leave is over and it's time for me to go.

Man I can't believe you Stef! Such a horrible mother- letting your son go off into the world like this. So selfish! Next thing you know you'll be driving around with your top down, looking for strong young men to bring home so you can mother them.
I'm keeping mine at home forever ![]() i'm a great mom |

Thanks guys - Helps to hear from others what I've been telling myself for months now.
And Zippy, you are a great Mom. ![]() We got him all moved in. Cannot believe it all fit, but it's in there and he's got plenty of room to stretch. His roommate is moving in now. We ran home for a little lunch, a cat nap and then have to go back for a parent meeting at 3. Just exhausted. Rain is holding off so far!

Mine still live in Virginia. I know I've got plenty of time to think about it but I don't know if I want to move back when I get out or stay on the west coast.

Don't worry Mama, same thing happened when i left home, and went 2000 miles across country. You're lucky he's only a drive away. I haven't been home since like Jan 13th or something. But what was your thing you bought him massive amounts of because you thought he might need it while he's gone, every mom has something she goes overboard with. My mom bought me a HUGE box of microwaveable popcorn and my roommate got an absurd amount of socks haha. The last day they were in AZ my mom didn't want to hug me goodbye because she was afraid she was going to just lose it and not let me go. Sounds like a good kid though, he'll survive.

Oh, and some advice from personal experience.... IDK if you know this about him, but if he does drink alcohol, tell him to be safe for the first few weeks, stay inside if you drink as much as possible. I know out here, there was over 300 minor in consumption of alcohol tickets given on the first weekend. I don't think Purdue is as big a party school as ASU, but i sure cops are still out looking. So even if you think he doesn't drink, tell him to be safe and smart for good measure.

Awwwwwwwweeeeeee Stef, you're little boy is growing up.
You may think the way you feel is silly, but it is really the sign that you are a great mom. He is lucky to have someone as great as you for a mother
