Question about brake boosters/master cylinders

I know this is the wrong forum... but i didn't figure it would get much attention anywhere else.

Today I brought home a 92 jeep wrangler yj as a winter car. Biggest problem we have is that when you push the brake pedal, it does not return/recoil. If you pull it up with your foot it continues to work as a normal brake until you push it again. The brakes themselves work perfect. I'm thinking either a master cylinder or brake booster but I have no idea how to diagnose it and don't want to replace one then end up replacing the other as well since they're not cheap. Can anyone help me out here? I want to get it fixed so i can finally drive it!

sounds like no vacuum to the booster or the booster is bad.

Edit: after a quick google search

possible brake light switch (The brake light switch was seated too far in it's hole, hindering the pedal from returning all the way.)

possible bad brake booster on pedal side - The way we used to check it was to pump up the brakes and hold the pedal down. Then crank the engine while still holding the pedal down. If the pedal doesn't go down a little when it starts ... Bad booster. But that was just our way

possible binding return spring - check under dash if u have a spring and/or binding parts

2nd Edit: i just realize that the thread i got that from was yours on wranglerforums

That's what I'm leaning towards as well. Tomorrow we're going to see if its not getting vaccum, if it is we're going to replace it. Hopefully that fixes it... don't really want to replace the booster AND master cylinder...

well if it isnt ne of them then its the master cyl. good luck my dad had a few mail jeeps (DJ body metal doors and roof) and somtimes the master cyl would allow brakes but no return due to corrosion in the master cyl. check the fluid to see if it is dirty/contaminated.

*Thinking back to my old VW that didn't have power brakes*

The pedal should return on its own regardless if you have power brakes or not.. there are springs inside the master cylinder to push the pistons/pedal back.

Question for you...

Do the brakes keep working (stopping the vehicle) until you pull the pedal up? Or does it only stop the vehicle when you have downward foot pressure, and the pedal just stick in the down position?
