You need the discs so you can update the drivers.

sounds to me like your loosing the motherboard due to all drives failing. if it was only one id say replace that, but as far as loosing everything yes your going to loose everything unless you get a portable drive and toss everything you need onto it. microsoft being the morons that they are made sure that it reads the board info during instal so when you put a new board in it it wont run smae with the cpu and hard drive. On the up side you can pick up a cheap motherboard on www.tigerdirect.com and do it yourself if you have the know how. If not im sure i could help you throu it somehow after all i got a degree in these god forsaken things

but boobies are healthy, and it would be fun blowing the computer up. I need to fix my potato cannon so I can shoot stuff again.

you will need the drivers to reinstal the disk drives correctly either way. you dont need a cpu to replace the motherboard just get a motherboar that is compatiable with that cpu which theres 2 amd compatiable or intel compatiable not too hard. with it being 3 years old its well a dinosaur in the pc world so any cheap compatiable board would work

sounds like you have leaking/blown capacitors and or ram errors take it to a professional (like my self) and they can verify i cann't with out looking unless u wanna open the case move the wires and get me a clear shot of the motherboard. and ram errors u need to use memtest v1.70 to test the ram if u see any red its bad. dont replace the mother board until u have it looked at. it could easily be a hand full of other issues. like is aid ram errors, bad ide/serial ata cables, bad optical drives, hard disk corruption/failure. power supply failure (under powering the computer this is very common for burning issues) the lack of an 80 pin IDE cable on the optical drive to prevent cross talk. and they list can go on for ever.

Sounds about right, you live in an area with alot of lighting, could have been smoked with out you knowing about it. An UPS is a wonderful thing. If you replace the mother board, yet retain the HD and use the same vrs of the OS you should be fine as far as your files are concerned. If nothing else just take the HD to a computer shop and have them down load the HD to CDs. Data can almost always be retrived, ask the perves that are in jail for crap on thier HDs

If the motherboard is not replaced with the exact same type (Chipset type to be specific)..... say hello to reinstalling windows if you have 2000 pro or up. Hardware Application layer (HAL) will have a panic and the pc wont turn on properly until you reinstall or repair windows so it knows what the new hardware is and knows how to use it. Im still leaning towards Power supply, Motherboard capacitors or ram.

did u get a cheap ass power supply that looks and feels like it was a beer can yesterday? claims its 450w but its really like 120w.... if u did i wouldn't be surprised if the power supply is dead again and i also wouldn't be surprised if it damaged the motherboard. as an example would you fix your mustang with fisher price parts? nah didn't think so so why is every one so cruel to there pc?
