Military guys and USAF
I know coincidentally someone just asked a question like this, but I would also appreciate any input or advice.
I am currently going to community college for a degree in criminal justice. I want to be a police officer, and my list number has already come up, I just have to finish 60 credits and turn 21 (both will happen 1 year from now) and I'd be in the next academy. Recently though I've been considering enlisting in the USAF or possibly another branch (Coast Guard?, ANG?). I originally wanted to join the AF and my dream has always been (still is) to be a pilot, any type of pilot honestly, but I doubt I'd ever be able to achieve that in the AF. However, I am tired of my school and living at home. I have nothing going on in my life right now I want a change. I'm interested in the military, but not making it a lifetime career. I was looking into the AF Security Forces, as it would count toward my CJ degree. I have become interested in security as well as criminal justice, so it kinda seems like something I'd enjoy. A few people in my classes are doing this. I would love to get to travel and go through basic training and all that stuff, but from what I hear SF is one of the most boring jobs one can have in the AF. I was wondering if this would be a beneficial or worth it even though I wouldn't want to stay in the military longer than the contract (unless there's a well paid job that interests me? I no nothing about careers in military..). I figure once I was IRR I'd become a police officer and my time served would count towards retirement, or maybe I'd decide to do something in security. Anything you guys can tell me would be helpful |

The experience from the USAF would be invaluable towards a career in law enforcement, you could essentially be paid to get trained then use the GI Bill to finish any degree work. This would give you a tremendous advantagein the long run, the training and experience alone would easily be worth the four year commitment.
My 2¢

Yea, you can get a good Law Enforcement from pretty much any branch. They all have their Military Police jobs. Like Navy is Master At Arms. The good shit comes when you land an intel job like one of the Crypto rates, or IT. (navy names sry) Once you get a clearance you average civilian pay in a job after Military skyrockets even just with a secret. And if you do take a rate like that you will get TSSCI or just plain TS clearance and you will have NSA, CIA and things like that offering you jobs with like 90k a year starting off. We had reps come to our ship and talk to people about it often. All to do the same job you did for almost nothing in the Navy. If you don't want those jobs, there are plenty other job offers with just TS clearance. Hell, they told us in class that the TS that I and many others are getting cost the Navy a 180k - 200k dollars. Renewal is cheap so businesses like people who already have them on Uncle Sam's dime. Speaking of GI Bill, the post 9-11 bill is a damn good deal.

As I said in the other recent thread as well; I'm about to enlist USAF soon....fiancee and I will be married before then so she can at least travel with and live with me. I'm ready for the change and so is she....I think it will be the best way for me to lay a solid foundation for a family/future for us. I'm excited as hell to be able to be a part of something so much greater than myself.
