3 World Recods Set in 1 Race!

This was in the semi-final round of Outlaw vs Extreme class at the 16th Annual U.S. Army Import vs Domestic World Cup Finals at Maryland International Raceway this past weekend. The Camaro set the nitrous Outlaw 10.5 world record for both 1/8 mile and 1/4 mile with a BBC and a lot of juice, and the RX-8 set the rotary world record with a 3-rotar 20b. The Camaro won the race on a holeshot! Domestics FTW!!!

This happened shortly after that record setting run. This Trans Am was shooting for the world drag radial record. At around the 1000ft mark, he pushed a piston ring or two and the tons of blow-by quickly filled his catch can in the fender. The can overfilled and spilled onto the track in front of his passenger side tire and he spun sideways. He still managed to run a 7.27 @ 173mph despite hitting the wall. He got spun around backwards and the wind caught under the wing and lifted the car up and over on it's roof. The driver wasn't injured and walked away with minor bruising and really sore.

You guys have no idea what a holeshot win is do you? lol

The Camaro had the better reaction time. He reacted to the tree .042 quicker than the RX-8. This meant that the RX-8 was already behind by .042 of a second from the hit. This means in order for the RX-8 to win, he would need to run not only a faster time but also make up that .042 lost at the starting line. This means the RX-8 would need to run a 6.47 or quicker to beat the Camaro who ran a 6.52. The RX-8 ran a 6.51 so he lost. Notice the win light that comes on for the Camaro at the board. A win like this is called a "holeshot" win because he beat him off the starting line. The faster car doesn't always win.

To make it simple and in one sentence, the RX-8 was faster but he didn't get to the finishline first, the Camaro did.

As for the Puerto Ricans celebrating, they have been at WAR with the Australians for years now going back and forth on who holds the record for the fastest rotary car. The Australians set a new record back in July with a 6.58 @ 214mph. The Puerto Ricans have been fighting to break that record for the past few months and finally did it on that run with a 6.51 @ 217mph. That's all they cared about. They didn't care that they lost the race because they broke the record for the fastest rotary and shut the Aussie's down right at the end of the season. That was their goal. Trust me, there was just as big of a celebration on Michael Martin's side (Camaro) as they broke the nitrous outlaw 10.5 record with that pass and got the win.

Yea i didn't know what a holeshot win was. thats why i didn't understand.

I still don't really understand what you mean. I thought the time started the second the light went green and stopped when the car hit the finish line?

EDIT: no ive never been to a track.

No, the time starts the moment the car's front tire leaves the beams at the starting line. If car #1 leaves the beams .01 of a second after the green light and car #2 leaves the beams .04 of a second after the green light, then it's like car #2 basically gave car #1 a .03 second head start and now he has to make up that difference and catch him before the finish line. It's a race to the finish line, not who has the fastest time.

OK that makes sense didn't know there was a beam on the front tires. Its a race not a time trial basically.

Right. The starting line has two laser beams that cross each lane. When you "stage" the car, your front tire has broken both beams. "Pre-stage" is when you cross the first beam and the first light will come on. You then inch forward until the second light comes on. You are then staged, the track official starts the lights, and when it hits green, you go. Beyond that, it gets really tricky with rollout time of the vehicle to leave the beams and timing the reaction so you are actually launching the car before the green light in order to get a good reaction time, and I won't get too much into that.

Call me old fashioned, but I'm used to seeing races where who ever gets to the finish first wins.

I actually understand what you mean. They have to time it so the lazers connect as the green light, lights up or as close as possible.

Same here and the camerro did hit the finish line first. The Rx8 just had a faster time, just launched a little later then the camerro.

Chocolate's got it. The difference the RX-8 was late isn't noticeable to the human eye at actual speed. If you slow it down considerably, you can watch the Camaro move a split second before the RX-8 does at the starting line. That's what got him the win.

I noticed the marrow off the line first when i was watching it. I also saw the marrow hit the finish line first also (from the angles it looked to be a little farther then the RX8. Couldn't ACTUALLY see it pass the line.
