Edit: The only problem with his idea is, what happens if you buy a house with a smart meter already installed?

Demand that it be taken off. They may have had permission from the previous owners, but not you.

I live in the shit, fucked middle of nothingness and my place has one. I suspect that all of the poco's customers do. The meter has a small radio transmitter. Meter reading is done in my area by a guy cruising around in a small truck. Keeps crazy dogs (like mine) from mauling meter readers.

That sounds like what they call "measures and signatures intelligence" in the military. Basically, you're collecting information by using the "exhaust" emitted from electronic devices. I don't know how it works nor do I really care. What I do know, is that it is ILLEGAL to gather intelligence on US citizens.

I have the old school original meter, however, I have an add on unit that I purchased that I use to help manage my power consumption. It tells me how many kilowatts I'm currently using, all history etc so I can help manage my power consumption. Honestly, it's saved me at least 40% in wasted usage, but I never thought about the signal it's transmitting.
