Bring it! I beat the piss out of mine every time I'm in it- when it finally pops, it'll be the excuse and impetus to rebuild and improve.

Zip, I'm relatively sure your mod motor has slightly better oil control than our old turds...lol

I drive mine down the highway a lot. A lot of weekends, I may put 300-400 miles on it, and with my 4 speed, and 4.10s, I do 57 MPH the whole time...lol. That's 2800-2900 RPMs. My engine has good bearings, modified oil galleys, and all that BS to help improve oil control, but a constant 3500 RPMs is hard on them.

True, newer engines are built and assembled with much better precision than was possible back in the '60s and '70s.

But still, a lot of the older stuff was built from the factory with low gears and no overdrive, so by design they turned a lot of RPMs on the highway.. not just cars, but heavy trucks too. Gas was cheap, so high gears and overdrives weren't necessary. And yet the engines held up to the highway speeds, as well as people running the shit out of them..

I'd say the rod bearings really catch the most hell when you run too low octane fuel and it pings. It will ping even more when it's under a load. I've seen bearings worn down to the copper without many miles on them... newer engines have anti knock sensors, and will pull timing so that it doesn't ping.

I'm fully aware of how old cars perform down the highway....lol. Just because people drove them like that, does it mean it wasn't hard on it? I mean I beat the crap out of mine on the street, and track, but do it with the understanding that it does reduce the life. Also keep in mind that the speed limit was 55 back then. As I said, I can do 57 and keep it under 3000. People didn't drive around at 80 MPH like they do now.

extended periods of high RPM driving is hard on bearings. That's why a lot of the big horsepower builds use a different journal. So they can slow the bearing speed for a given RPM.

If my puny Dodge 2.0 SOHC can take 10 hours running at 2500 RPM, I think your 5.0 can handle it.

Plus as others said, these engines were designed to take a beating. We have engines here at work they run for 50 hours straight at full rated power. We're talking big engines running at WOT, 400+hp, 1500+ft-lb, and often they intentionally cause them to detonate just to see if they'll keep kicking.

And guess what. They do.

Hopefully Ford designs them to the same standards we do.

^^^^^^^ that's like comparing apples to oranges.

But at 2200 RPMs, drive that thing coast to coast 10 times without stopping, and you won't have any troubles. I'm talking about high RPMs for extended periods.
