Hendrix was the greatest ever.
Stevie Ray Vaughan second, Eddie Van Halen third.....can't forget Angus Young from AC/DC, either. I defy you to name someone who has/had more energy than him on stage.

Robert Plant was the best singer ever IMO.

John Bonham was the best drummer for me.
Phil Collins second.

Lars is indeed one of the best drummers ever. But he's metal, not classic rock, in my opinion.

Heres a category for you guys "Best Song Writer" and I would have to say that one goes to Tom Petty (that dude was awesome). Oh and Hendrix was good I love his work but I think people have made him a little overated, I personally think he has so much popularity is because one he was black (a rarity in classic rock, keep in mind I dont consider blues to classic rock even though it to is pretty good) and he was also a lefty so he got a lot of credit for being a bit of a pioneer in the music industry. So I do believe Hendrix was damn good but there were better guitar solos and playing out there that have just been overlooked ie. Pink Floyd and Comftorably Numb.

countryboy, i agree with you whole heartedly. I didn't even finish your sentence and Tom Petty entered my mind. As for Hendrix... well had he stayed off the drugs then maybe, but his technique was sloppy. He is so overrated that i am almost disgusted. Don't get me wrong, his ideas were great, almpst godly but he was pushing the boundaries of his capabilities too far. Especially when you add drugs and alcohol to the mix. By all means, pushing your boundaries is vitaly important, but not when you are in no state to learn and become a better player. Clapton on the other hand I can agree with. He is the reason that when anybody who knows anything about guitar talks to you about the wha wha pedal they tell you that that is as close as you can get to making love to your guitar.

jimi hendrix was self-taught. he didn't learn what he did from someone else. what he did for rock music and for the guitar came from the page that wasn't even in the book yet. and i believe drugs and alcohol played an important part in that. some of the greatest guitar players in history came up with incredible ideas and techniques while they were under the influence of mind-altering drugs. henddrix- yep he used drugs. clapton- oh yeah, him too. carlos santana- sure did. stevie ray vaughan- so did he. the thing is, most of these guys cleaned up before it was too late. some people argue that their playing actually wasn't as good after they sobered up and got clean. don't mean to sound like a dick or anything, i just wanted to clear some stuff up. you can't call hendrix overrated and then name all these other guys that came after hima nd talk about how great they were. without what hendrix contributed, these guys probably wouldn't have been as good. just my 2 cents. oh and i've been playing guitar for 10 years.
