With this amount of power and gearing, it's pointless to shift sequentially through the gears.

In fact, from a dead stop, taking off, and as soon as it senses that you're pushing the clutch in, it throws up a sign on the gauge cluster saying "SHIFT 1 -> 4 FOR FUEL ECON". It seriously tells me to skip 2nd and 3rd. I still shift sequentially regardless of how pointless it is (Like 400 RPM drop max between gears.) just to get it broken it/get a feel for it.

Thanks everyone!

It feels like a luxury car compared to my Mach.

I miss the hell out of my Mach, but I'll end up in another one when this one is payed off. (As a second car.)

Drive it like you stole it, Calogero. Vary the speed. Don't baby it, and don't run a constant rpm on the highway for the first few hundred miles.

The trans am I had would block off second gear when I reached 2k rpms so when I shifted down it made me go straight to 4th It was really annoying.

Well rather than start a new thread with a debate. Should I follow through with my original plan and not see a needle past 4k RPMs for 5k miles or should I do what the salesman said, which is put 500 baby miles on it then kick it in the ass whenever I please?

It's weird that 4 salesmen said that, but as soon as Zip tells me, I start to believe it. Lol

I wouldn't lie to you about such a big purchase my man. 42 years old, I've driven a shitpile of new cars, and also new engines in cars. Going over 4k will not only not hurt it, it will be better for it. What you're trying to do is seat the rings properly against the cylinder walls. Now, you ask 100 guys you're going to get a bunch of different answers and a longass argument... but if you're going to 'break it in', it should be broken in as you plan to drive the car.

Now, I'm not telling you to bounce it off the rev limiter right out of the box. But drive it hard. After a few hundred miles, change the oil. Then you're good to go.

What I did with mine was, on my 248 mile 1 way commute, get on the highway, took it up to 70 mph, and then kept changing between 4th and 5th gear as I varied my speed a bit... did this for about 60 miles... then for the next 200 miles, I kept taking it up to 6000 rpm, or just shy of my red line. I drove that same way the 248 miles home, changed the oil over to full synthetic, and never looked back. Then I bought my CAI & tuner, raised the rev limiter in the first 3 gears, and started fucking WHALING on it. Right up to 6400 rpm in the first 3 gears. ALL the time. Car now has 75,000 miles on it, and other than a hint of white/light blue smoke on start up if it's been sitting for a few weeks... it uses/leaks NO oil, and feels as peppy as the day I drove it off the lot with 7 miles on it.

Will do! I'll be taking some backroads tonight to visit my friend so I'll bring it up to about 5k playing around.

I can understand the engine break in process that your talking about, but what about clutch and transmission? This clutch by no means feels like my Mach. It feels almost non existent. The Mach was mechanical and pushed back at you which is what I'm used to. This one (hydraulic), on the other hand, is extremely light and I have to actually lift my foot rather than release my foot to engage the clutch. Save the gear slamming for later?

To be honest, this transmission feels notchy. Being brand new, I assumed it would just go in any gear while the car was off, but even first gear, you have to push the clutch in (while it's off) to get it to completely fall into first. Will this change for the better eventually?

With a normally operating clutch, you should have to depress it all the way to the floor to pick up 1st gear at a standstill. As for break in, the clutch and transmission will be fine with the aggressive driving I mentioned. Maybe avoid power shifting for the first few hundred miles, but other than that, have at it.

If it remains notchy, I'd speak to guys here with the new car, like zinc maybe, who have experience with the new five liter. I know a lot of guys have changed their gearbox oil over to products like Royal Purple, or Amsoil, or something of the like, and seen an improvement in shift quality. Not sure if this applies to the new 6 gear unit in the new Mustang, but I would have to be pretty sure it would be the same effect.
