I Need A Laptop!

But I don't know shit about computers

My brother majored in MIS, which has a lot to do with computers, but every time I ask him to help me figure out what to get he just keeps doing whatever he's doing, like eating while watching TV and using his laptop, and then he kinda looks at me and then just laughs. Not much help at all!

I'm starting classes at January 16th. I have around $850 to spend but I don't want to spend it all, but I want something good lol.
Can any of you help a computer retarded guy out?

Laptop shopping bores me. I'm so bored by computers... Just the technical part of it.

I have a Sony Vaio laptop that's been running strong and stupid fast for almost four years now. It was $800.

If this one ever dies (highly doubtful, it's already been through an entire tour of Afghanistan and countless trips everywhere else), I'll buy another one in a heartbeat.

Just my $.02

I'm not a computer nerd either,so I can't really help much. I have this laptop and bought my wife a Toshiba at the same time and they both have been great so far! We have had them for a year now. I know it shows that my model is discontinued but figured I would throw out a recommendation for a Toshiba.

I know you will probably overlook this but for what it's worth, I just bought an Apple MacBook Pro and I love it. I've had Dells, Gateways, and my last laptop was a Samsung.

Stay away from the Samsungs, I had trouble with it and the battery quit after a year. Disappointing. My Mac get around 7-8 hours per charge just browsing the internet. It runs Photoshop great, even compared to my desktop it so much faster.

If you're not willing to spend a little more for an apple laptop then listen to some of these guys suggestions. They provided great info in my thread. I'll see if I can find it right quick and link it to you.

EDIT: Looking at new laptops. Opinions?

There ya go. Hope that helps. I had a $1k fund to go off of as well, so there should be some good ones in there to read about.

Another question is, what will you be using this laptop for the most?

I can't really give you my opinion because I've only owned an hp personally as far as pc goes but as a repair guy, Dell sucks.

Hp and Asus are in my personal opinion the best pc's without much usage on other brands just the fact that I get more repairs on other brands.

If you decide to go with a Macbook Pro, They run $1200+ tax. I paid $1,400 for everything I have and its for sale. Not even a year old and every spec you need is in my for sale thread. I'll give you a good deal on it if your interested. I started my price at $1,000obo and very flexible.

The laptop that sikedsyko posted looks like a nice machine.. personally, because I like playing games on my computers, I wouldn't get anything that doesn't have either an ATI or nVIDIA display... if you want to play games on it, you'll have much better luck with those. Although the Intel graphics or other generics will get the job done (and will be fine if all you do is web browse), a lot of games don't support them.

I want an i7 processor, but everyones like "Oh you don't need 6 cores, no man should have all that powa!"

so I'd settle for an i5, but NO LOWER!!!

Thanks for the recommendations, i'll check em out. Any more? I wish deciding a laptop was as easy as deciding on an AR15.

At least for AR's, you have a set standard, and there are reviews for what companies build great products that have been tested to make sure they function and last. With laptops, you get new technology and stuff every year and then what you have is soon outdated. The AR15 design has been around for 54 years and still works. Can't say that any modern computer will last that long.

I would not get a Dell. End of story. I've seen way too many problems with them. Like Blitz said, stick with an Asus or HP and you'll be golden. The previously recommended Asus would be a great computer.

I don't get virus' either but for someone who doesn't know how to prevent them or how to manage a windows machine it can be difficult.

That's why I suggest a mac or if you have one custom build even a linux machine.

My windows machine works great, all I use is MSE and don't even worry about it. No viruses in several years.

Only reason I'm getting a Mac is cause I have the money now and I need a laptop for school. And the fact it weighs like 2 pounds is nice too.

At first I read, "I need a tampon."

Then I read, "I need a lapdance."

Then I had to stop and think about what's going on in my head.
