Best Program For PC to PC File Transferring?

So with my new computer coming, and us still going to be using the old one for my wife's scrapbooking room, what is the best program to use to transfer data back and forth between computers? And also can this be done through my wireless network?

Easiest way would be to connect both computer to the network, and use the Windows file browser to copy//paste//remote network drive.... Assuming they're both running Windows 7

I just use an external hard drive to transfer documents from one computer, to another, easily.

What are you looking to transfer? Theres a bunch of easy ways of doing it. Couple of things depends on the O/s and if its something simple like pictures and music, etc. Usb/external drives would be easiest.

Just plug BOTH drives needed for info transer into the same machine. Boot it up and copy/paste from one to another. I do this constantly between drives, as it always gives me a perfect back-up

These computers are going to be in 2 separate rooms, so I can't run a 60 foot USB cable between machines. External is a good idea. hmm.

Anything I can do wirelessly?

Just use DropBox.

Or allow sharing between the computers through the network.

You could also install pidgin on both computers, set up a Bonjour account (really easy) and send file transfers to and from each other. What's cool about this is that it discovers people in the local network to chat with. Should work as long as your firewall allows communications between the two.

yea software is retarded just set them both up on the wireless newtwork. then make a folder on each one and share it on the network and drop whatever you want in that folder and it magically becomes available on the other machine. all they have to do is put the same folder on their desktop. or just share the whole drive on the network and be done with it. computer>drive to be shared>right click properties> sharing and enable it. it would be a million times easier if both machines have win 7 sense vista is useless

It's easier when both machines are in the same workgroup no? That way they're able to discover each other easier than if they were in different workgroups.

Edit: Looks like this be true according to this

Thanks Dennis. That sounds good. One machine will be XP Media center edition, the other 7 Premium.... so can I do this with one machine, the new one, hooked up to the router directly, and the older one connected wirelessly? And will I need to put a wireless network card in the old pc for this to happen? Not sure how that works, like if there's just an adapter I plug into the back of the machine or something.

We on campus used Handy Backup and then transfered over to Microsoft Rich Copy. Rich copy is a lot faster, recommend it over Handy backup. just giving you two options.

If it is hooked up to the wireless router directly through a cable then it should be fine, as long as both machines are connected to the same router.

Depending on you router, it may be faster with a USB. It would be even faster to actually plug the hard drive on a sata port in the motherboard. If your not worried about speed then wifi will work just fine.

The new machine is going to be hooked up to the router directly, the old one will be in the backroom hooked up wirelessly. I can't run a CAT cable all the way back there. DO I need a wireless network card for that machine?
