Puppy Crate Training

We just got an 8 week old golden retriever puppy. She is nothing like our older dog was when he was a puppy. She absolutely hates the cage. She just whines and crys when she goes in it. The only way to get her in is to let her fall asleep in my arms first. She went out 3 times during the night but woke us up crying atleast 6...
Anyone have any good tips?

They just have to get used to it. Make sure she has a blanket and put her in your room but don't shOw her any attention or affection when she crys. It's hard but over time she will accept her crate.

The only thing that sucks is that we are in an apartment so I'm worried about our neighbors hearing her. Do you think during the day it may help to just put her in there sometimes and ignor it then?

Yep. If she isn't eating drinking or going per she needs to be in there. Of course she needs play time too but other than that she needs to be kenneled up

4-7 days and she will love it. like thrasher said, put a blanket in there and reward it when you put it in there. try putting a blanket all the way over half the crate. it will help her feel safe.

O and it may take a week or two. Go tell your neighbors and tell them to give you a call if it's bothering them. You know just in case.

Good plan. We just moved in so I'm still trying to meet them. I'm going to let her out in a few to play nd then try putting her in there for an hour or two while we go to the store.
Thanks a bunch guys.

if it takes two weeks you have a stubborn and a potentially problematic dog. golden retrievers are very similar to labradors and ive crate trained 6 labs.

We have a pit mix that took like 3 months to not cry on his crate lol. My schnauzer and chorkie never cried a minute. It just depends on the dog. My pit can't Stan bein away from me so that's why it took him so long.

I see I see. Yeah I've been told they are smart breeds but she better get used to it soon. We do work to pay the bills. She is a sweet dog though. Puppies are just a handful.

well that might be because pits are fucking retarded ass extremely territorial dogs but yea.

our dog was like that for a while. we actually put one of my old shirts in the crate with the puppy so it had my sent on it and he slept on it with no problems. of course im not a fan of cages so he no longer has one but yea if you must crate train your dog try that. also a brick warmed in the oven wrapped in the shirt helps allot too due to the mimicking of body heat. sense the dog sleeps in your arms that may help allot

Thanks Dennis. Yeah she definitely loves us. I'm going to put a shirt in there though for sure.

That is her and I this morning.

How much is she crying? Is she getting worked up or just crying? I've been through this a ton of times but my current puppy absolutely hated the crate, first time I had a puppy act like this. Soon as she went in there she would freak out, start standing on her hind legs, doing donuts, crying, barking, howling, getting really worked up. If the puppy is doing something like this than you can't leave her in there. It will make things much worse.. There are some dogs that just need more time growing up and small amounts of time in the crate. There are also puppies that just flat out won't go in the crate.

Like Dennis said if she's just crying, putting a shirt in there is a great technique since it will make her feel comfortable.

She is just crying a lot. I got her to walk in there herself with a toy before we left and gave her a treat. Only been gone an hour.

I love Pits, I always was told when I was younger that they were aggressive, nasty dogs, then I met a lot of people that had them and havn't ever seen one that was mean.

My favs are still Akitas and Huskies though

The problem with crate training is that if you are unable to gradually get them used to the crate,(as in someone is home all the time and can leave her in there for 15-20 minutes at a time, rewarding her when she doesn't cry) she will learn to HATE her crate, sometimes dogs just don't like crates, others take well to them right off the bat.
