Relocation information for Salt Lake City

There's a small chance I might be relocating to the Salt Lake City area due to the wife's work, specifically Sandy (or commuting distance to Sandy).

What can you guys tell me about it? Love it? Hate it? Somewhere in between?

How are emissions there? I see in-city has some sort of testing, annual testing for cars more than 6 years old... is it just a sniffer? OBD2 code scan? Visual? Is there a cut-off point where you no longer have to do the check?

Is Miller Motorsports Park the only roadcourse in the area?

Is there any non-SCCA autocross?

Is there decent beer, or is everything capped at 4 percent?

How's the food? Can you get organic produce without being steeped in patchouli-stench?

How are the roads? How are the cops? Is 5-over gonna get you a ticket, or can you do 10-over without thinking about it like we do here?

Anything else a poor northern Cali boy might want to know?

Thanks!

Really? Nobody from Utah, or that's lived in Utah?

Or do they just not allow 'net access during business hours? ;P

I cant speak for living there. But some friends and I rent a house in Sandy for a week every year to snowboard out there. Its a nice area but not a lot going on in Sandy. I think the cost of living is a bit on the steeper side of things but still relatively reasonable.

Cant comment on the car scene as I always go in Feb so all the nice toys are tucked away for winter when Im there.

BTW-Hope you have nothing against Mormons or people who have a dozen children...

Cost of living steeper compared to where? Rent looks to be about 2/3rds-3/4s of what we're paying out here.

I hate Utah. There's a lot of serious corruption. And Utah has a police problem. Somebody was telling me about some secret legislation that occurred where nobody was informed and a lot of damage was done. Ogden just had a huge funeral for a cop that was second through the door when cops shot and killed a guy for holding a golf club. One of the cops here had the record for DUI arrests accros the country. Yes, you can be charged with DUI for ridding your bicycle while on seizure medication. And even if you inform the officer that you will fail part of the field sobriety test due to a one leg being shorter than the other(a legitimate hadicap) it still counts as a failed field sobriety test.

Utah traps people with low wages. You move here, good luck saving up enough to move away, even if you make decent money.

The state has a monopoly on liquor. Everything is taxed, taxes go for the state, the state runs the retail liquor business, which is taxed. You can go to a bar, but they're pricey.

Salt lake city is where the LDS religion runs everything from. From Africa to Canada and back, if its Mormon, its handled out of salt lake. Salt lake city is the Mormon mecca.

Fishing, hunting, outdoors stuff is awesome. Just don't get busted in a small town.

I recommend against Utah. There's too much bullshit.

...before the 'its the same everywhere' bit comes out, I've been all over the western U.S.. been to Mexico too, and say its not the same everywhere.

Sorry for the late response BTW.

...hypocrisy and porn are rampant in Utah also.

Cool, thanks for the input.

Luckily for me, it sounds like that job opportunity has fallen through, so we won't be moving there.
