$11,000? Sell yours and you should have a few thousand left over. But I agree, I would rather have a fastback. My dream car would be a lowered fastback with a GT500 engine, lowered, and modern suspension.

In all reality the classic market roller coasters on price pretty regularly. You can find some cheaper and in just as good of shape. As far as the coupe vs fastback thing, I use to think the exact same way until I realized I only like the fastbacks when they are more modded. I saw a fastback the other day that was all stock and it didn't look all that great to me
![]() As far as driving conditions, there is no feeling like a classic and I find it better feeling that newer cars. Also when something breaks on an older car the fix is often simpler considering no computers or anything like cars today. The adjusting to the driving might be harder considering you started out in a newer car going to older. If you find one you like though since you are passing on this one try to get a chance to test drive one. You will more than likely love the feeling. Reliability might not be that much of a problem either. I drove mine daily throughout all of high school and a little after so probably 5 years total. Never really had a major problem with it. Now that it gets driven alot less and parked for longer periods of time the car has more problems that it did being a daily. And that was with no power steering or power brakes. And no A/c or heat. Wouldn't have traded that feeling for anything though All the people talking to me about it or the kids getting out of school watching and smiling as I drove by, They are real attention getters.

![]() ![]() With the classic stangs, depending on what the VIN says the factory engine/tranny combo was (and whether it is still numbers matching), the value can vary substantially. Now, whether it is all numbers matching may not matter to you at all, but unless you do your homework, you could end up paying for a supposed numbers matching k-code car (very rare) and end up with a 6 cylinder base model with a V8 swapped out of an old truck (unfortunately common). Read into it. If all you care about is a restored, mechanically-sound car, and care nothing about the other stuff, more power to ya. Just make sure someone doesn't try to mislead you.

Also if you do eventually look into finding one check for rust in the most common places. The cowl is rusted through will leak water into the floor during rain/car wash and such. Mine does but I just bought the cowl cover as a temperary fix. Also its common for the floorboards to be rusted through. Of course patch panels can fix that just make sure you inspect everything first

Also the underside of the rear fenderwells. My mum used to have a 64 and a 71, both rusted out back there.

If you prefer driving the '68 to your '06, by all means pick it up. I'd rather DD an S197, but my opinions and preferences aren't yours.
Now, as to the coupe vs fastback thing, it depends on the year. IMO, the fastbacks were fugly until '69, with the exception of the '67/'68 with the Shelby ducktail spoiler. One thing I will say for fastback, though, is that I've *never* seen one with a six-cylinder in it... I don't even know if you could get a fastback with a 200.
