Need Opinions on "NEXT" definition
My wife and I see differently on this. Apparently it's not as common as I thought. So I'm asking for your opinion, here's the situation.
Today is Monday, January 30th. Now lets say that I say "next Saturday we'll go see a movie." What Saturday would we go see a movie? Saturday, February 4th? Or Saturday, February 11th?

You could always rephrase and say "the following Saturday" |

yes, so if i say ill slash your tires next year, ill be referring to doing the deed in 2013
(however this definition can be slightly different, if you are in school, in which case, most people in high school, will be talking about the next 'school year') |

Next year is 2013 why? Because it's the NEXT year on the calendar. The say way that next Saturday would be the NEXT Saturday on the calendar. Thus, Saturday, February 4th.

but a year is an extended period of time therefore, the rule of next need not apply.

This...
No, 2012 is this year and 2013 is next year. 2014 is the year after that...

Next Saturday is Feb 11.
Because "this" Saturday is in "this" week, therefore Feb 4 That's why I'm going to do something next year = 2013

I go around this issue and avoid confusion by saying "this upcoming Saturday." Clears things up usually.
But next Saturday is the 4th in my book.

Your year logic is off. If it is Monday (today) then next monday would refer to monday 7 days from now, so if its 2012 then 2013 is next year.
I have always said Saturday for the 4th and next saturday for the 11th in this situation

I accidently voted for the 4th. Next saturday would be the 11th to me. I always make it clear by saying "not this saturday but the next".

Next week would be the 11th like everyone else said. If it was on or before Saturday the 28th it would be next week. If it was said on the 29th or after it would be this week if were talking about the 4th.
If today were Friday, and u wanted to see a movie the next day on Saturday, you wouldn't say ill see you next Saturday. Also years don't apply to the same logic. |

![]() next - definition of next by the Free Online Dictionary, Thesaurus and Encyclopedia. next (nkst) adj. 1. Nearest in space or position; adjacent: the next room. 2. Immediately following, as in time, order, or sequence: next week; the next item on the list. adv. 1. In the time, order, or place nearest or immediately following: reading this book next; our next oldest child. 2. On the first subsequent occasion: when next I write. So what part of the definition of "next" says that "next Saturday" would be the Saturday after the next calendar Saturday? To further expand, lets talk about school years for those in high school/college. Lets say it's summer break (thus you're not in a school year) between your Freshman and Sophomore years. Then someone asks you, "are you going to be a Sophomore or Junior next year?" What's your response? By your logic you would response that you're going to be a Junior. If it was during the school year you would reply Sophomore, but since it's between school years then your reply is that you're going to be a Junior. ![]() Expand that to college classes (same scenario). Someone asks you what classes you're going to take next school year, how do you respond? I would tell them the classes I'm going to take as a sophomore. But you would give them your Junior year classes? To me this is the simple meaning of "next". "Next" does not mean the time after the soonest coming event in question. Next means the very soonest happening of the event in question. In the original situation "this Saturday" is the same as "next Saturday". I will say that a lot of people miss-use "next Saturday", but that doesn't mean it's right. People miss-use a lot of words such as, centripetal/centrifugal or then/than or who/whom or their/there/they're. I also posted this on Facebook and I think this is a left/right side of the brain deal. Nearly all of my friends who went to Purdue for math/science degrees end up saying the answer is Feb 4th. Nearly all of my friends who go to IU for liberal arts degrees say the answer is Feb 11th.

Yeah, she said "next" means the Saturday 12 days from yesterday. I said "next" means the next Saturday (ie, 5 days from yesterday). So I figured I would post it a couple places just to see how everyone else interprets it.
