Jeep vs Truck

I stumbled across this truck today that is roughly the same price as my jeep. I started thinking that a truck may be more reliable than my jeep. But i love my jeep! So many memories, easy to work on, im educated with them, it was my first car and the first car i learned to drive stick. It just sucks on highway and has the dreaded "death wobble" (must be a jeep owner to understand). I am in college with struggling funds but its pretty much the same price so all i have to worry about is the trouble to sell the jeep and buy the truck. Anyway, heres my jeep and what the truck looks like. This isnt the truck, ill get a picture of it soon. Any thoughts? Anyone here own a jeep?

[IMG][/IMG]

The jeep has 137xxx miles and not a single engine/transmission problem in the 5 years iv owned it. 2.5'' lift with a custom paint job (grandson/grandfather project). Has some rust issues on front fender and 1/4 panel on pass side. The biggest issue i see is my jeep is a 4cy so it really sucks on highway and higher speeds. But it is so versatile for off-road and has amazing turning in tight spots. I've never even drove a truck before so i dont know if i would even like it,

The truck is a white 1998 Dodge 1500 v8. Has 133xxx miles and their asking $4995. The jeep can be sold here around $5000 so very close in price! The v8 truck would be nice, especially in the winter and the highway. Im now in college and travel 80 highway miles on weekends to and back on weekends. The only killer would be the insurance. Im not sure how much i would pay. Im hoping i can talk them down to around $4500 and keep some cushion to sell the jeep.

And no im not buying another mustang! I live in snow country so i barely get to drive the one i have now!

Keep the Heep.

Especially if you and your grandpa worked on it together. I wouldnt be worried, if your familiar with the vehicle and it gets the job done, keep it.

If you NEED a truck, then you need a truck. And then the truck your looking at may be promising. But if i were in your shoes, i'd keep the heep.

Yea, unless you need a truck dont bother.
Jeeps are more versatile and bein able to remove the hard top is nice.
Plus you can go off roading.

I had a Cherokee, and loved it. I beat the hell out of it and it kept on ticking. But when it came time to let it go, I was in the same position you are. I ended up buying an 03 Silverado Z-71, and I'm glad I did.

The Jeep was awesome, but the truck is just so much more comfortable, and spacious. I only drive five miles to work, and I can't even begin to tell you how much better it is in the truck than the Jeep.

Loved my Cherokee, but I'm glad I moved to a better vehicle. I think you will be too. Get a truck.

I turned down buying a 3rd jeep this week. Was planning on buying a 02 grand cherokee, but opted to buy a 90 bronco just because i can pop the top off (that and it was 1/5 the price for half the miles )

Another vote for the jeep. Gas will cost more in the truck I'm sure, not to mention it doesn't look like its 4x4. Plus, chicks LOVE topless jeeps, at least out here.

I had a buddy with a 98 dodge. It had alot of problems always. The radiator would constantly get a hole in it, the catilytic converters would always fall apart and clog themselves up, fuel pump went out, dash in every dodge truck I've ever seen falls apart. The thing was hard to keep on the road. It could of been that particular old worn out truck, but judging by that experience I am leary to buy that model dodge.

I do love taking the top off, so i dont see how i could let it go. I just absolutely hate the 4cyl. If i didnt have the stang i would v6 swap it or even slap a turbo on just for some extra hp, but when were talking $1000s of $$, it goes to my car

I'd say keep the Jeep, dodge trucks have shitty transmissions, if you really want something with a bigger motor get a Jeep with a I6 4.0 they can't be killed

^ +1, I had that year Dodge....had nothing but problems with! Constantly had to put new hubs on it. The day I traded it in the trans started slipping and they are known for tranny problems. Jeep all the way!

Thats the last type of truck I would buy... BIG POS... I am not a fan of a dodge truck until around 2008ish... The cummins (which that truck is not) I am a BIG fan of...

If I were buying an older dodge, I would have a 1990-1992 D250 with a 5 speed and a cummins.

Also Jeep I am not a fan of after the family has had 2... the liberty we still have (for sale now, it got replaced by an explorer). It gets 13-14 mpg in town, has never shifted constantly, and feels down on power compaired to my sisters old 4.0 V6 explorer that was older.

Dodge and Jeep are pretty much the same thing. Just like most Dodge's have problems, Jeeps also have the same problems (it's like thinking a Ford won't have problems when the Mercury has problems).

The bottom line is that Chrysler sucked at building vehicles in the late 90s/early 00s. I had to choose between that truck and the Jeep, I would stick w/ the Jeep.

Not true. My dad has got a 2000 Ram 1500, and he has literally not replaced anything on it but the tires. Not a speck of rust on it, but he also got the Rustop undercoating.

Even with that, I'd say keep the Jeep. For one, it's going to be a pain to buy a new truck and sell yours, even if the cost difference is a wash. Second, a known evil is always better than an unknown one. Your Jeep might be in rough shape, but you already know all the problems. A new vehicle is rolling the dice. That's what kept me in my stupid Neon all these years.

Unless you absolutely need the hauling/towing capability, I'd say keep the Jeep.

yes but up until the recent years of dodge getting rid of the 4.0 I6 jeeps were unstoppable, my grandpa's friend had a 95 cherokee(sp?) with over 500,xxx miles and the worse problem it ever had besides it getting smashed by a semi was the fuel pump

Seriously, those dodges were awful. Between U-joints, hubs, transmission and poor mileage you will kick yourself every single day.

I'm with Matt, the only dodge I'd ever own would need to have a cummins in it and a manual transmission. I like the KISS method.
