Mother of all shipwreck finds!

All I can say is wow. Evidently, a treasure hunter just found a WWII shipwreck off the coast of Maine with 3 billion in plainum on board. It says the platinum was a payment from the Soviet Union (coming from Nova Scotia) to the US back in WWII but the boat was shot down before it got here.

Talk about the mother of all paydays!

Greg Brooks, Crew Target $3 Billion Platinum Treasure from WWII Shipwreck

I've always loved reading about ship wrecks, and finding at the bottom of the sea. Thanks for sharing FF.

If he was granted salvage rights then he is entitled to the spoils.. I am sure that even if the US took the platinum, he would get a handsome reward...

Wow... That would be so awesome to be that guy right now! I wouldn't wish that job on anyone though. Years of eating quick noodles and just skimming by for the HOPE of finding treasure. LoL

Shit, I would be happy with 10% tax free from the government. 300 million untaxed could easily provide for a family for a hundred generations when done correctly.

Just to give you guys an idea of what 300 million dollars can do. If you invested it in a pretty conservative manner you could realistically see 8% annual returns. 8% of 300 million is 24 million dollars. That means that you could spend 24 million dollars a year for the rest of your life and every generation to follow ( 2 million dollars a month which in turn is roughly $66,666 you could spend per day) and never actually touch a dime of the original 300 million. So techinically, 300 million could last for an infinite amount of generations as long as no one does anything stupid with the money.

And remember, those figures are based off 300 million not the 3 billion found! Add two zeroes to the end of all my figures for estimates if he got to keep all 3 billion.

I can't even begin to imagine what it would be like to find a shipwreck. How cool. Even the life experience is worth it.

Thats what my dad always talked about when i was a kid. that if some how he was left with or won that large of an amount (which would be taxed) but that if you invested right, you could live off of the interest easily.

This is what Im always trying to explain. You dont have to have millions to do this. Its just about being financially educated... If I actually withdrew the interest and dividends out of my personal accounts I would cover my bills each month off that alone ( but since I have a good income its more important for me to leave that to reinvest and let my money compound over the years ).

Like I said, its all about being financially educated, living within your means ( ie not trying to get what you want when you want via credit ), and saving... Its really easy to set yourself up for a great life but it requires you living in moderation when your young ( and this has to happen when you are young as thats the foundation for everything as you get older - the later you start the less you will be capable of producing ).

I dont think he will in the end. With that kind of possible payout (if it gets disputed) he would have the best lawyers in the US knocking on his door pleading to represent him. He could pay an attorney a billion dollars to get him all the money and still come out ahead.
