I was a Diesel tech at a really small dealership for 2 years. I didn't make even close to 6 figures. However, I got raises quickly and before I got laid off I made $20/hr. Not bad money, but not nearly 6 figures either. You'd have to be a Senior Master Tech pulling in all kinds of gravy work to make that kind of money. Ford beats up diesel techs on warranty work. Luckily I convinced my boss to pay me straight hourly instead of book rate. I could barely beat book time on the tough jobs by the time I was laid off. On some stuff I still couldn't beat book time.

UTI in Glendale Heights, IL. Took Auto + Ford F.A.C.T. 2005-2006. I did double time for a good while and was done in a year and a couple of months.

two of my friends went to UTI. both take their classes very seriously and absolutely love working on cars.. they ended up having to go back to a community college to learn what UTI didnt teach them.

imo, a local community college can give you the same education for less

I believe this is true IF you don't take factory training. However, I think UTI is worth every penny if you can get into a factory program. The stuff you learn there is exactly like what the dealer would send you to, only you learn it much faster. As a tech, you'll be lucky to get sent to training once or twice a year. Sometimes less than that. With the factory training programs you have it all right away. There is very little guessing when you actually get into the dealership. Of coarse it helps if you are working at a dealer or a shop while your going to school so you can put everything together.

ya its definately worth it.the ford training is the way to go IMHO ONLY for the diesel certifications..i still kick myself in the ass for not sticking with it. Hub City Ford in Louisianna offered me 28/hr starting off but i didnt wanna move..now i make 20/flag...u gotta watch it with employers though man.dealers will in MOST cases make you a lube tech, wear you out,and pay you shit. the firestone i got into(we do everything, not just tires damnit!) the guys were really supportive and taught me anything and everything from day one.if you dont take ford, take cummins.its a bitch to make money flag hour if your in a semi slow shop.they say average i think 20-25k is how much a student makes there first full year out..gotta loook at the small statistics. i made 32k my first full year,38k last year.this year shuld be 45ish but it really aint shit IMHO. ive debated going back for diesel since they always have jobs open and they always pay good.
