The best advice i can give you, is to study other boxers and their style. It's amazing what you can pickup by just watching the greats.

Exercise wise.....CARDIO!!!!!

Oh and hit the heavybag and focus on hitting the bag quick and focus on bending the bag NOT pushing the bag. You can tell a good striker from the sound the bag makes. Good punches make that POP POP sound on the bag instead of a thud noise. If the bag is swinging wildly you are pushing the bag, not "snapping" your punch.

Cardio, and punching, movement in general man. NOT massive muscles and weight training, that's what it's not about man.

Keep on challenging your cardio to the point of puking.
Practice proper technique and using your body not your arms for strength.
Breathing will have a lot to do with it too (when to breath in and out)

I moved from practicing mma for fun to boxing for some reason I like it more.
Listen to your instructors or plan on skipping for hours.

What's your height and weight? If you research Rocky Marciano he actually got his ass handed to him in the early days before pro boxing because he was not in the best shape. If i remember correctly he told his brother that he will never smoke again and he will train so hard to have great cardio and not lose his breath. The man had insane stamina because he would jog i believe 6-8 miles a day. Crazy.

Also learn to slip punches. Watch these two vids man, teaches you alot.

LOOK AT ROCKY!!!!!! Insane how he could slip these hits..... And people call him out to be slow and awkward, the man was a genius, just watch.

not good...unless you got that one hitter quitter haha

Are you a heavyweight or something? Or overweight?

Quickness will come with cardio...the heavier you are, the slower your punches will be (unless your in Tyson-esque condition). Do a lot of running.

The best way to go about learning to fight is to get punched...right in the face. Just stand there and get hit. I know it sounds crazy but it will help you deal with the times you do get hit so it won't put you in a state of shock when it does happen. Imagine what it'll do to your opponent when his punches do nothing to you...I can tell you it's not a good feeling. One time I got hit real good and lost my sight. Everything turned black. Fuckin scary. My training seriously helped ALOT by dealing with the loss of sight and mobility. You learn to keep calm while moving around the ring...or "getting on your bicycle" as you might have heard around the gym. After a whole lot of that, start mixing in defensive work...no punches thrown by you. None. Have someone straight-up spar with you like normal but you just work on slipping/blocking/footwork/angles....sooner or later the game will start to "slow down" and you'll start seeing openings and mistakes made by your opponent. From there, you'll be in good shape...you'll have learned the most important part of fighting, which is head movement, footwork, ability to recover from a punch (yes, punching too)...all that good shit. Learning how to correctly throw a punch is also important, of course. You'd be amazed at how much more force you can have on a punch just by "stepping into it". You can hit the punching bag by yourself tho, that's why I recommend working on defense..you need another person actually throwing at you for getting good at that. Watch tape of fights like burton said. A few months of getting hit (like I talked about above) will turn you into a fuckin animal. You won't be as scared of punches coming at you, and in the back of your mind, you know that's IF you get caught...which is where the head movement comes into play. You'll also learn to get rid of the bad habit of closing your eyes when someone flicks out a little jab or straight. They notice you closing your eyes and they will key in on it and knock your ass out. Very dangerous to not see a punch coming...they turn out lights. Keep your chin down too...throat punches are a bitch. Fuckin hate that shit.

I remember my first "boxing lesson". I got absolutely destroyed...picked apart. It was funny tho, I would be bobbing and weaving and my opponent would be leading me with his punches...like throwing at exact the spot I'd be 1 second ahead of where I was currently at. That's what pissed me off the most...it's like he knew where I was gonna be before I got there. Going through the beatings is what encouraged me the most...seeing how good I could get if I stuck with it and worked hard. And another thing that is very helpful is working submissions. Jiu-Jitsu. Never be content with what you know...that's when someone will come along and choke you out. It's good to have knowledge in all facets of the fight game. Just something to think about.

Nice! And how he feinted Walcott with the left and made him lean into that straight right knockout punch FUCK!! EPIC. Man, it was a different time back then...fighters seemed so raw and murderous.

Don't ask these guys, boxing is simply either in you from birth or not, period. Anyone will tell you that, you either have the golden hand or you don't. I've been told I do in both, my dad was nearly pro around here back in the 70's, hardest hitter here.

When you try too hard or have someone train a person who just doesn't have it from birth, you get a guy like Victor Ortiz. Someone who has it from birth who is trained well, well.....you get a guy like Rocky Marciano, Mike Tyson, or Joe Louis.

In high school I had a crazy schedule.

Summer... Wake up, noon go to boxing, 4pm football practice, then after football go back to boxing.

It was a 2and a half mile walk from my house to the gym so I worked my way up and started jogging it to/from everyday.

During football season it was all football, just go a couple days a week for some light technique/LIGHT sparring session.

Offseason for football was school, then football, then straight to the boxing gym.

I fought at 5'6 131 but I played football at 155. I always fought during off season obviously.

I completely disagree. But thats what great about a discussion And how can you say Victor Ortiz isn't a fighter or doesn't have it in him? Did you completely miss the Berto fight? If he didn't have it in him, he'd have quit a long time ago while going through that rough period of time. Instead, he stuck with it, got better and re dedicated himself to fighting. If that's not a true fighter, I don't know what the fuck is.

Victor Ortiz was more interested in making out with mayweather than boxing dude. Trust me, not one single fighter alive is anywhere near Rocky Marciano's pinky. The closest to even a guy like Sugar Ray Robinson or Rocky would be Manny Paq but even he is nowhere near Sugar Ray Robinson or Rocky Marciano. The fighters today have no heart or strength, no punching power. Thats why there is so many UFC fighters....nothing to differentiate between others, no single advantage in punching power. The heavyweight division was decimated years and years ago, the last true decent guys being George Foremans comeback, Mike Tyson, and Tommy Morrison (albiet for his steroid induced left hook).

Another example, David Haye in the heavyweight division. All talk and no fucking action, a guy more concerned with getting a maniciure than punching power or skill. Big George would've eaten him alive.

You know what.. You're comparing two very different times in boxing. It's so much more technical now. Marciano, Ray Robinson, Walcott, Jack Johnson were each great in their own era..when fighters were good at taking punishment. It was brutal back then. Nowadays, you can't even land a punch on some of these guys. It's not fair to compare these two times in boxing.

And don't get me started on MMA fighters...they take KICKS to the fucking head. That's like getting hit with a baseball bat. You can't tell me they aren't as tough as boxers. I'd say they are tougher.

George Foreman was good, yea. But all you're doing here is naming off "only" some of the greatest fighters in history and comparing them to what you claim to know as "good" current fighters.

And the next great American heavy weight champion is in the NFL. Back in the day, they didn't exactly have million dollar contracts for playing sports like football or baseball. One hell of an incentive to not Have to fight for a living. That's why there were so many great heavyweight fighters back then. Fighting was it.
