I got to know a few sommeliers (one has been a Master Sommelier candidate for about 3 years now; that test is fucking insane, she miserably failed the first time) when I was 18 and did tastings with them for years. It's true, some of the nuances were likely lost on a pallet and nose like mine, but certainly not theirs, so it was a treat for me and them. They picked it out, after all. Besides, this is a fortified wine. For the most part, the flavors were immediate and blasted you in the face. It's not at all a subtle wine.
Thats precisely my point. You are the 1% ( now give me your damn money! lol ) I was talking about plus you were with people who knew wines to also help explain what you were looking for and possibly missing. But the other 99% of people out there would be better off with a couple bottles of a fruitier blended wine and achieve the same results.

Most 21 year olds can count on one hand how many bottles of wine they have drank in their life ( I was like that as well at 21 ). Hell, It wasnt till I was 25 that I really got into wine and learn the breathing techniques and how to let all the regions of your mouth sample the wine and absorb the different flavor to maximize a wines potential.

Subtle or not, you still have to know what your looking for to really make the most of it and how to do that.

Yeah, wine is still something I have zero palette for. Which is sad considering I'm smack in the middle of California wine country.

I just... I dunno... I can't really get into it. I've tried 10-20 bottles, and nothing's really grabbed me as something I want to keep in the house. Korbel has a good muscat champagne (err, "sparkling white wine") and a port that are decent, but nothing I find the 30 minute drive and $20/bottle worth.

I have no idea why. But I really enjoy wine.

Then again, I have only had 2 forms of alcohol that I don't like. Chinese liquor and bourbon.

Thanks everyone! I ended up going with a few buddies to Applebee's (everywhere else closed early lol) and drank a couple beers in the bar there, all in all, I had a good time...I think I'll be content with being able to remember my 21st birthday lol
