Dog may have to be put to sleep...what would you do?![]() Here is the situation. His name is cooper and he has some kind of neurological disorder, i believe its called Fibro cardilaginous..I was on my computer and my gf left the room with cooper behind her. when she turned around to see him she noticed that he was not using his back legs, just pulling himself with the front. We stuck with him on the ground for a little while and then decided to go to the emergency vet, it was 12:00 at night. The vet says that they dont know if he will ever walk again or pee or poop by himself again. They currently have a catheter in him and IV fluid. The vet called my gf today and told us about putting him down. They stated that he doesnt appear to be in any pain he just cant walk and cant poop/pee by himself. biggest danger at this point is the infection thats in his bladder because of not being able to pee, The biggest danger when this type of stuff happens (when they loose the ability to walk) is where they cant empty their bowels accordingly leading to massive infection and usually death. Not sure what to do! hes not in pain but ultimately will be because of the infection. They say normally they could teach us the owners how to manually press on his bladder to make him pee but because of something they said to her hes not a good candidate to send home to have someone other than a trained vet do it. Neither of us have the money they are requesting and are just in huge state of confusion as to whats the right thing to do?

You only have two real options.
Have him put down and avoid any possible infections. Or learn how to take care of him and risk leading to an infectius/disease death. Id go with the first option when things start to get bad and he gets pain.

Sorry for your situation man. If i were in this situation I would probably have him put down. It will be better than him suffering down the road and you can give him a proper burial.

He may not be in pain but that doesn't mean he is not miserable.

Terrible spot to be in. Sorry to hear this.
I'd put him down to save him the pain later. Imagine if it were you cant walk, cant pee, can't poop..let him go easy and keep the great memories. Or keep him until he is in pain and remember the horrible last few days of his life forever!

Talk about a shitty situation. I dread the day I run into this with either of my dogs.
But Im with these guys. Sounds like there is really only one good option...

I had to put my childhood dog down about two years ago ( 17 year old lab ), I knew he was getting put down in the morning so I took him for a last walk the night before. I was crying so hard while I was walking with him ( he couldnt see or walk very well ) that when a neighbor came up to me to ask if I was ok I couldnt put two syllables together so all I could do was walk off. This is truly the only time I can remember crying over the last 10 years.

You really have one option.. And thats put him down.. Its horrible, and it sucks, but its part of being a pet owner..
You will cry, and it will be though.. But you will see him again someday. When I had one of my dogs put down, I remember reading a deal that the dog can't move on in spirt untill you let them go. And I say this because it was very very tough on me to loose my girl, it was sudden, and it was horrible. And I wasn't ready at all to let her go, she was still very young (2years old), and it wasn't her time. Anyways, I had a rough few days (week), with her gone, and it really took me finding that poem to let her go. I still miss her, and I wish I could take it all back. But I can't, and I know I did the right thing.. I wish you luck my friend..

a buddy of mine went through this... he had a bosten terrior names shiner. Same exact thing happened. and the only thing they could do that would be for the dogs best interest was putting him down. Im sorry to hear bud, but i hope all goes well, or if worst case happens... im sure he will be missed. I hate loosing dogs. my oldest might be getting there soon her arthritis is just getting to her.

Go see your dog, you'll know if its time to put him down our not. If he still wants to live - learn how to treat him. Know that it will be a huge amount of work, and make sure you are willing to put that time and work in. The most unfair thing to him, would be not put in the level of care he needs and let him suffer.
Vet's offices have plenty of ways to help you figure out how to pay and cut costs. Ask to speak with some one in billing/finances.

I'm sorry about your dog it truly is sad when you have to make a decision like this.
I had to put my lab down last year and he was my best friends for 15 years me and him did everything together car rides eat and sleep together. The day i had to put him down I made him a nice big beef roast that he could eat and $100 worth of treats that he loved. It had to be one of the worst days of my life losing my best friend

so sorry to hear that
I couldnt stand seeing my dog like that I would have to put him down if the quality of life isnt where he can enjoy his life and play, go places, go bathroom where he pleases outside well then I would rather put him down then watch him live like thay if u decide to put him down, be with him in the room, its the least u owe him for bwing by ur side always

Go read "The Art of Racing in the Rain". It may help you with your decision, one way or another.
I'm sorry to hear this, and I dread the day that something similar is going to happen one of my dogs (my lab already has hip problems and eye clouding).
