Denver Residents, Here I come...

Well, I just got out of a meeting and looks like Im being relocated to Denver in 6 months. But I volunteered for the position so, its not a bad thing.

So I need to start looking for houses and what not. Advice, tips, tricks?

Im thinking of looking probably 20 miles from downtown. Any side better than the other? Any places with better mountain access than others?

eh, I'm definitely moving back downtown as soon as my lease is up. the commute is a pain in the ass. dt to the mountains is about 45 mins to an hour in good traffic.

I cant do downtown. Im not doing the condo/apartment thing... I like my space, garage, and yard way too much. Plus I have two dogs and it would be too much of a PITA. I can deal with the commute. Considering how much I work, rush hour wont be an issue.

Yeah, thats one thing Im looking forward to. It will be nice to be able to day trip to go snowboarding or kayaking rather than having to take time off work and do a 10 hour drive to do either.

If someone asked you to sum up your thoughts on Denver, what would they be?

Highlands Ranch is a gorgeous area. Lots of affluence with moderately priced homes and still a relatively short commute. If you do work down town, the Light Rail will also take you directly from Highlands Ranch to 16th street in Denver.

John, I am confident that you will love Denver. I myself have visited Denver, and it's a bad ass place to live. My younger sister lives out there, and has done nothing but rant and rave about how much better it is than being in MI.

I personally like older homes and more space around. I would get into an older neighborhood if possible. The trees are grown and no covenants.

East of wadswirth/Sheridan is a lot of violence and a poorer area. Lakewood, Littleton, Morrison, Golden, roxburgoh park(further away) are all real nice areas.

I would be looking in southwest metro area. Where is your office going to be? I'm about 10 minutes from down town. That's my Lakewood home. The place I stay at school is about 20 minutes away.

If you need shown around a little when your looking for a place, holler at me.

Also feel free to ask me any questions.

Yeah, its right in downtown. If I picked up a place 20ish miles outside the city is there an amtrak setup I could use to commute with?

The light rail is developing.... But not quite finished on the west. If you live south it will be right into town, from the west it's still a year out or so to finish the construction.

yeah you could look at some places next to RTD light rail stations. I'm sure you can check out the bus stops too but i only took two buses ever. i hated them. i get to dt everyday by light rail.

I will have to look into that. I would think if the commute is that bad I would probably just opt for the rail so I can work/read on the way in and not worry about traffic. Does the rail system run at night as well? Like if you go out drinking can you use it to get home?

What about some general statistic like crime, thugs, poverty, ect...?

The do run all the time but on different schedules sometimes.

The aeras I posted would probably be the nicest older areas that still have some development, highlands ranch you're around a lot of younger yuppie family's starting...

yeah rush hour traffic just fucking suck. usually on good traffic, i can get to dt in 10-15 mins. with traffic, that doubles... to half hr at least. by the light rail, i can get to dt in 20-ish minutes. they are very reliable and typically comes in on time. you may have to wait 3-5 mins longer in dt stops due to traffic lights. not bad though. i can't wait to move back so i don't have to wait for that anymore

during the weekdays, no you can't they stop running about 12:30-1am. on the weekends, you can cut it close. i believe 2:30ish am is the last stop. the last call is at 2am, if you don't ride a fixed gear... yeah good luck i typically crash on my friends couches and leave in the morning anyways.

there are gangs (although i haven't seen obvious ones, I've seen crips tags on the walls), I've seen a few fights, i almost got mugged once, homeless people can be dicks to you if you don't spare some change. however if you don't act like a douche and not aggravate people, you'll be fine.

actually i just remembered seeing a group of 5-8 asian guys wearing blue and white plaid shirts. one guy punched another guy in the face and immediately everybody joined the puncher... i told my friends to get the fuck out of this area (we were trapped by a barricade in front of a club) then i waved down a police cruiser to take care of that bullshit. they all ran off. i didn't feel like in too much danger, most of them were 5 foot something 120 pounds I'm not the strongest guy in the world but yeah i could've taken him.

people can be dicks to you on the road if you ride a bike. same goes for bikers if you honk at them for no reason, they'll fuck up your car. so you gotta respect them, they have every right to be on the road. I've seen a few dui on the road, one we actually got in a fight with because they kept cutting us off in the middle of the road. I've seen a few hit and runs from parallel parkers.
