One of the long-standing myths about modern currency is that it is backed by the U.S. gold supply in Fort Knox. That is, you can trade your greenback dollars to the U.S. government for the equivalent amount of gold bullion at any time.
At one point, this was true of most paper currencies in the world. However, the U.S. took away the government backing of the dollar with an actual gold supply (known as leaving the gold standard) in 1971, and every major international currency has followed suit.

The obvious question is, "Without gold, what does guarantee the value of our money?" The answer is: nothing at all.

The only reason a dollar, or a franc, or a Euro has any value is because we have a stable system in which people are known to accept these pieces of paper in return for something valuable. Or, as Nobel Prize-winning economist Milton Friedman puts it, "the pieces of green paper have value because everybody thinks they have value."

I was wrong...That is how we established the value of money though...Without the past backing by gold other countries would not have recognized it as a official tender...
Chris, my man, you sure are versed in the field of literacy. I try to talk as respectful of my words as possible during a debate, but you have got me beat. Just sayin, well done, buddy. (glad to hear your term is up too, just a side note, but thanks for what you did, me = appreciative)

For the most part, I think Chris, HMUSN, Drgnrcn, and I are on the same page here. We've got nothing against people trying to better their own and their families' lives by living in the United States. However if it is their perogative to do so illegally, not only should they be removed from the country, but whomever was their employer should be punished as well. Unemployment in our country has fallen a bit recently, but is still oh so high. Truthfully, in a perfect world, there would be no one left without work. But until that day comes, let's go ahead and give American money to American citizens, working American jobs. Period.

(this thread is novel-esque and as such it has become very invigorous to my brain. lol. Oh and... je parle francais, un peu, mais, vraillement ce n'est pas m'aide dans Les Etates Unies)
