First impressions of my brand new Tremec TKO 600.
Well, first off, installation was a nightmare, mainly lifting the TKO into place, its more than double the weight of the stock T-5. But looking back on it, its worth it, was my first time installing a transmission nevermind a full blown swap, so what can I say.
At first sight of the transmission, you can easily see the difference in the two. The case of the TKO has ribs, it has access plates on top that are gold and the shifter is red. The input shaft looks like a car axel, being that it is 26 spline compared that of a T-5 which is 10 spline. The input shaft is also larger in diameter. ![]() So driving around....Ive been driving with it in the car for about 3 days, so its definitally not fully broken in. Its still a little notchy but already far ahead of my stock T-5. I had a pro 5.0 shifter on my t-5, I didnt reuse it, because you need a diff one for the TKO and it already comes with a short shifter on it. And let me tell you, the shifter on the TKO makes the pro 5.0 feel like a stock shifter. The throws are like an indy car, extremely tight. I am very proud to have this transmission in my car and would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone else. You have to get used to it at first, like the fact that you cant just throw it in reverse. Normally on a stock transmission when you put it into reverse theres always a very slight grind which is normal, the difference on the TKO is, that slight grind is translated into a massive bang due to tougher gears. This is easily resolved by putting the car in 4th before reverse, which I am informed by my friend who also has a TKO 600, is normal. The shifter is also very tight. When you move it side to side in neutral, its almost like your not moving the shifter at all. It also doesnt make that annoying clunking when you do it like the T-5. I could never go back to my whiny T-5, and I would never choose another transmission. The longer 1st gear of the 600 as opposed to the 500 is a perfect match for my 4.10 final drive ratio. TKO 600 all the way.

Sounds like a good swap there!
I want to put a close ratio TKO-600 in my '72 Mach1. It is equipped with a 460CJ. Anyone know which model (which shifter position) to order so I don't have to give up the factory console? Much obliged, Mustang Gregg mustanggregg@alltel.net |

Alot of people say Tremecs shift like shit. In reality you have to get used to the way a Tremec shifts. Its just like going from a Muncie to a top loader. The shifting feels different. Once you get used to it you will be able to shift it just like a T5. You will love the reliability of that Tremec.
