Whats the dumbest car maintenance mistake you have made ?
The dumbest thing you have done while working on your car ? ( make it funny)
One time I was changing out one of my tail lights and totally forgot to put blinker fluid in it.Luckily I realized it before I left my driveway. But now that tail light doesn't work ,and its leaking. Strange Another time I forgot to prime my air bags after a cam swap.

one time i went over 10,000 miles without changing the air in my tires, suppose to do it every 5,000 miles and well it nearly cost me a set of tires and wheels. the old air corroded the wire in the tire and my valve stems.
Now I put nitrogen in my tires, it last alot longer. Got it free where I used to work. I can tell a differance in it also, the ride is alot better.

I forgot to latch the pins on my fiberglass hood so I am driving down the road and BOOM the thing fucking rips off the hinges flies over my car tapping the top and lands about 30 feet back.
I pull over and run to the hood and am like FUCK ME!

I have forgotten to tighten my lug nuts once on an el camino I had years ago, and I was turning to the left to go into walmart and the damn brake drum fell down on the inside of the wheel. Luckily it didnt fall completly to the ground!

I was hung over really bad a little over a month ago. I pulled my Ranger into a bay to change the oil. Well I pulled the latch and "nothing", so I pulled it again........nothing........again.........nothing. So I bend down to see if the cable is connected to the lever.............. all good there.
So I pull it as hard as I can........nothing so I hit the dash in anger and go outside to the hood of the car and start to push down on it........still nothing. Then my buddy Dave comes over and ask whats wrong, so I tell him and it went something like this. Dave: So you hood wont open. Me: Nope Dave: You sure? Me: Yea I tried everything. Dave: How about this......(pop) the hood opens. Me: WTF did you do? Dave: I used the hood latch to the right, not the E-BRAKE release on the left. Me: (silent with shame).

Ok I guess since I been working on cars so long, I have had enough time to do enough stupid shit.
Heres one I done recently, sorta my fault but IMO not really. And its one you guys doing cam swaps and shit should pay attention to. I was putting the timing cover on a 4.6. Bolted the harmonic balancer back on and noticed it tightened all the way up flush to the timing cover, which isnt suppose to happen. Turns out someone moved the crank positioning sensor gear from where I had put it, so therefore I over looked it and didnt put it back on the crank before installing the timing cover. Thats why the HB tightened up flush to the cover. That CPS gear acts as a spacer also. Needless to say the car wouldnt crank with out that part.

I forgot to double check the timing on my alternator once and after that it wouldn't charge my fog light button or HVAC knobs.

Me and a few friends a few years back were drinking and working on one of the guy's 99 SS Camaro...
The next morning we all wake up from our alcohol induced coma's to find that we hd worked on the SS...What a mistake...We were supposed to swap the intake for a LS6 intake and put new plugs in it...Not to hard right? Well the next morning the plugs were in but the intake was painted to look like a lady bug...We figured whatever...We then checked the plugs...Yeah they were gapped alright...We had beat the damn gap shut...No wonder the bitch would not start... So we ended up with a 1999 SS with a lady bug inspired intake and had to go buy new plugs...All with the worst hangover in history... Luckily we did not make it to the ZR1 corvette that was sitting behind the SS... |
