Which diesel truck do you like?
This topic has possibly received some of the most diversed opinions i've ever seen. So i'll ask it on this forum. Out of Ford, GM, and Dodge, which diesel pickup is the most attractive to you? For me it's the closest choice between Ford Powerstroke and the Dodge cummins ISB.

as a certified med duty tech, the duramax is the quietest out there..but too many issues right now to make me want one myself. Overall, ford has the largest room in their vehicles, but engine wise, as a cummins tech, i would want the isb for power, durability and most of all...reliability

Here is my fantasy choice. It is an F-650 XD. It is a Ford truck with a Cummins engine so its a great combo. They ARE available to the public but the prices start at 85k for a stripped down, rubber floor mat, manual window/lock, base model. They claim it gets about 19 mpg and can seat 8-12 in seatbelts. I LOVE THESE TRUCKS!!
![]() ![]() ![]() In real life I may one day be able to afford something more along the lines of an F-250/350 SD. That is my dream truck. It would have to be a 4x4 with the Power Stroke. I know the Cummins is a bit of a better motor being an I6 vs. a V8 but Ive driven the Cummins (both the old one and the new one) and the Power Stroke and the Duramax. I didnt care for the Duramax and I just prefered the whole ford package over the Dodge. ![]()

Yeah, I was watching trucks on Spike the other day and they did a makeover on an 06 F250. they did a Bully Dog performance programmer with a monitoring system and a full Bully Dog exhaust and claim it added an extra 140 HP just from those 2 mods alone!! That is a lot of HP to be had from a few simple mods.

I like the ole 12v cummins. Others will have more power, but they will not out live it.

i like the cummins but the ddge trucks just fall apart aorund the engine. its a million mile motor with a 150k mile body, the duramax is nice but like someone said, still has a few problems but once youve driven one with an allison tranny, holy hell youll wan one. as for the ford i dont have any experience but i am sure they are great engines! and diesels are badass for making a ton of power. theres a guy around here with a 6 speed cummins that has twin trubos and water/ methanol injection and ive seen him run an 11.3 and have it on tape somewhere!!

The 7.3L Power Stroke was an awesome engine. The 6.0L Power Stroke stubled a little out of the gate, but they seem to have the bugs ironed out now from what I hear. What scares me witht he Power Stroke is that the 08 Super Duty Fords are going to be redesigned and they are getting an all new Power Stroke from International (same manufacturer for the other 2 Power Strokes) that will be a 6.4L Twin Turbo. I'd either get one of the current 6.0L or wait a few years to make sure the 6.4L is ok.
The Cummins in the Dodge is a good motor, but Dodges have been notorious for transmission problems. The only plus side I see for the Chevy/GMC is you can get it with an Allison transmission. |

The only problems I have heard of with the Power Stroke is that being a V8, they are prone to having the cylinders get egg shaped and the other thing I heard was that the turbo is hard to work on being under the intake manifold.
I agree, the Allison tranny is kickass!! The Chevy I drove was a bone stock 2500 HD. I liked it and the cab was very comfortable but there was still just that little something about the Ford that I liked. |

I dont have any experience with the newer Dodge trannys but I had 2 Dodge 3/4 ton Diesel work trucks at my last job, an 01 and an 02. The 01 had 3 trannies and lots of front end work done all within 138k. I will say in its defense that it didnt go anywhere without a full bed of tools and parts and a VERY heavy trailer with anywhere from 3000 to 6000 lbs of equipment on it. It was an automatic.

On the autos you have to beef them up. The six speeds are nice.
