question about top fuel dragsters and funny cars.....

I went to the races friday night (midsouth nationals at memphis motorsports park) and saw night qualifying for the first time. it was a sight to behold.

While I was watching, a question came to mind.

when those cars do their burn outs, there are no flames out of the headers and they DEFINATELY dont sound the same as they do when they actually launch during a race.

What gives? are they burning a non-nitro fuel during burn out? only firing on one magnito?

whats the difference in the burnout and the actual launch?

Maybe they don't have the throttle all the way down during the burnout?

I duno. I just know when they launch, there are 12 foot flames comming out and the things will nearly burst your ear drums.

when they do a burn out, they dont sound much different than any other outlaw street or bracket race car with open headers and there are no flames.

they have to be doing something different during the burnout.

im guessing no nitro to save on money. maybe they are just burning alky during the burnout.

well if you watch the crew, the cheif adjusts the carb for the last time after they have done their burnout. This takes it up to full potient power and that is my guess.

If I remember correctly they actually turn on the nitromethane injection after the burnout but I don't remember for sure. We had VIP passes to the MAC Tools pit a couple years back in Joliet and they explained how these cars work. I don't remember all of the specifics though.

I think they only use one (of two) fuel pumps during the burnout as well.

That is what i was trying to remember. They do it becasue they only have enough fuel to make it down the track after they have done their burn out and about to stage. Thanks darrell!
