Why can't v8's hold as much?

I have the feeling this might be controversial subject but oh well! The other day another Marine and I were reading one of his import magazines and they have this 1992 skyline (Nissan 240sx for domestic folk!) and the thing has a stock compression ratio of like 9.1:1. Put header back exhaust on and a fuel pump.injector upgrade and load the thing up with 24psi intercooled! It had like 420RWHP with an 11:1 compression ratio! Everything was stock except for what I mentioned. And it could run pump gas. And for those who may not know, this car is a 4 cylinder 2.0L.

Now the purpose of this post wasn't to talk up an import...it was to give some background on my question. So...how in the hell is it this freaking import can hold all of this boost and run that much HP and still have stock internals?? And our V8's wouldn't be able to do that? I mean, in theory, if a 4cyl could hold over 400HP, why can't we hold atleast 500HP on a stock bottom end and internals? Someone please enlighten me!?!?

Becuase we have hypertonic (sp?) rods...

Those little 4 bangers are forged...

Put it side by side with an 03 Cobra and see who makes more power...I bet the 240 falls rather short...

it's the quality of the internals brah. ours are crap. ie not forged and just dont' have the ability to withstand that kind of power.

that's it, plain and simple.

And that thing had more than 275lbs of torque bro. I'll see if I can get the exact numbers....but either way it makes our dowmestics seem like we got ripped!

That's totally BS! I'm really unmotivated now. These little 4 bangers that you can pick up for like 4 grand and boost the shit out of them. And our big ass V8s are.....Argghh, I don't even want to finish.

the biggest problem with the high boost 4 banger ricers is that they are still super gay.

Its never cheap...

The grass is always greener on the other side...

If you had forged internals and a poweradder you would be putting their numbers to shame...

First off 275 ft lbs of tourqe is a joke.

Also did you read any.......I mean any of the responces?

If you want a V8 with a forged set up to handle boost like that then get a 03/04 Cobra. Only thing that is going to match that is a Supra block and that is it.

4 bangers have a bit of a edge on boost out of the "box". But they are also turbo to begin with and most V8's are not FI. So they need the forged bottom end out of the gate (FI 4 bangers that is). I really see no reason to get all worked up cause a factory turbo car has a forged bottom end and a N/A car does not.

you're getting yourself worked up for no reason

i highly doubt he has 24pounds of boost with an 11:1 compression ratio and the only upgrades are a injector upgrade and exhaust

tahts bs

he got some serious money in it

and 11:1? thats beastly.. 2.3Ts use 8:1 and on 24 pounds 400 hp is pretty damn easy

Yeah I have to agree with MSO (again)...

11:1 is some helacious compression for 24#s of boost...Hell you could not even run that car on pump gas even if it was possible at all...

That would be a wild ass motor to run at all. I don't care what kind gas it is running. That is a lot of boost on a short stroke.

Im not a car expert but my first question would be, how long will a 240 last producing that much hp? I mean, the "internals" arent the only thing that keep an engine running. How long will the transmission, brakes, SEALS, vacuum lines etc last? Would it be possible to get 300 hp out of my 6er with some minimal extreme mods? Maybe. But it wouldnt be a daily driver for long.

How many other parts would you end up needing to replace within the first week of that kind of beating? Maybe Im wrong but most people dont have the pocket book to support that.

I know I can realistically mod my V-6 for another 30-50 hp with under $1000 and not have to seriously modify anything else. And still drive it everyday with confidence.

so I say, yes, its cool that Skylines can be made to put out that kind of hp, but would you want to?
