what ever happened...

to when people modded cars for the fun of working on their car and for building something custom that they put their own time and effort into?

i mean absolutely no offense to people who pay to get work done on their cars, but it seems like most of the people here pay for parts and then pay for some mechanic to install them..

for me, half the fun of having a fast and cool car is building it... learning how everything on the car works.. taking it apart and rebuilding it using your own knowlege to construct a work of art, that in the end only you will truely appreciate.

this ideology might just stem from being raised up with old cars and not being able to afford taking them to a mechanic to get it fixed, i had to learn how to fix every problem myself.. from a broken transmission to a broken axle, i used old repair manuals and my own two hands to disassemble and fix, then reassemble my cars/trucks/jeeps/bikes to make them work properly..

why dont some of you people here do stuff like headers and cams yourself?

my car is one of my hobbies.. it might not be very modded yet, but i still enjoy changing my oil and working on it every chance i get. putting my car in the garage, turning on the radio, and twisting a few wrenches is a way for me to relax and enjoy myself.

Here here well spoken! been building all my life. I only outsource (PC term) what work I can't do myself do to lack of machines, or knowledge. My Stang "poon-stang" has been in build since March of 06. It should be done in 08. My son and I have built the car fron the ground up. As I have said before I was a Navy Man while my kids grew up, and this is, in a small way, an effort to make up for those tims when I was away. We have drawn closer during the build. He is in the USCG as a mech, and really knows how to do shit know. And along with going fast I belive the car should look cool as well. So mine will have a rear seat delete kit installed over the new fire wall (hand crafted be me) and a full interior. I'm old school as hell, and got my son's attention to this way of thought.

I love working on cars, I don't even get hungry or anything just thirsty lol and I'll work on it for the whole day just like mesmerized while I'm working on it. It's a true passion of mine!

+10000000000 ive never had anything done to my car that i didnt either do myself or help with (gears) i love working on my car myself because like everyone elts said its a way to truly make your car what you want to make it and everything is a learning experience...if you take it to a mechanic and tell them to put everything on thats kind of lame....

my first car was a '67 ranchero. i've had the engine out twice, heads off twice, transmission out twice... all of it i did with a friend or two or just me.. never took it to a mechanic. that thing always ran great, i had a little 302 matched with a C4. i had so much fun with that car till i broke a piston. then i bought my mustang and fell in love with it..

but the ranchero's new engine is almost ready to go back in, i just need about $600 more to get 'er runnin again. the only thing a mechanic has ever done on that car is getting the heads rebuilt. which i probably could have done but i didnt on that one thing.

That's part of learning... anything : )

If you just take the time, be patient, and research, you should be good to go.

I personally HATE getting my hands dirty. However, there is a certain feeling of accomplishment when you learn how to do something. On top of it, when you do something that makes a dramatic difference... that first time you start your car and hear/feel a difference. Knowing you did it yourself makes it all the better : D

I love to work on my car myself but since i'm not what you would call mechanically gifted i just give the mechanic more to do when we eventually take it to him...

Only mod I've paid someone to do was the JLT CAI install and Diablosport dyno tune. That was because I was out of country and I wanted it installed and tuned before it got shipped over here. I'm glad I did too. Everything else I do myself if I have the right tools.
